What's that old saying, "You can't see the forest for the trees". So I'm sitting around this weekend coming up with a new strategy for drumming up new business. I open Quickbooks and I pull up my report which show's where my business is coming from. And then it smacks me in the forehead like a ton of bricks. NOTHING WAS LOCAL! Everybit of my business is coming from other parts of the nation or from other countries. So my gameplan shifts into finding more local business. Soooooo, I visit the local Chamber of Commerce website. Hmmmm, over 600 members. I then visit the Chamber of Commerce office. While talking with the lady I'm explaining what I do. Voiceovers for commercials, narrations, voicemail. And she says, voicemail? Seems she does her voicemail and hates her voice. Soooo, guess who's doing it now.Smile Long story short, don't overlook your local area for opportunities. Just thought I'd pass that along. Gotta run, got over 600 members to call and introduce myself too.....

Thanks for sharing that, Russ. We need to be reminded that we sometimes need to "live the business" right here at home.
I have an art directer partner in Charlotte and a friend in Baltimore that stay booked from referrals from the local networking clubs they joined.

It is indeed a good reminder Russ.

My VO coach said in his marketing seminar that one should start in one's own backyard. I'm just now starting to get involved in local business-related organisations and am having a blast.

Steve Anthony gave me a nudge last week regarding local ad club activities. That's another great networking resource. I had scoured ours for contacts 2 years ago, in the "take take take" mode. See Pat Fraley's "Gypsy's Guide" for a testimonial related to ad clubs on what can happen when you give give give. Smile

I hooked up with what I thought was a local ad agency. It seems it was a branch office for a major Chicago agency. Now I am a go to voice for one of the largest toy manufacturers in the country.

You never know who is around the corner.
