using abobe cc - audition - no change in settings, mic position, head/body position - nada --- but a semi-drastic drop in gain. not catastrophic, but irritating.

That. Is. Weird! The only thing I can think of is that it's one of those wonky CC updates that screws everything up.
If there was no recent update....then I got nothin'! _________________ "What was that? An exhibition? We need emotional content." - Bruce Lee, Enter The Dragon |

The line in the middle looks something like what you get when a switch is hit, such as a hot swap of a mic or a reseating of an XLR jack (or, for that matter, a switch from an A to a B mic in the case of a mic switcher). You've said there were no changes, though -- so it possible there was an inadvertent soft switch in there (as with a software pad switch)? I don't know the pre or the interface you've listed, but my Apollo interface does have soft pad switches that I've accidentally tripped in the past.
These are reaches, though, since you've said you didn't do anything different. _________________ Jack Daniel

The line in the middle is my "snap" to separate files. I thought about that as a cause, but I do it a hundred times a day, and it hasn't broken anything so far. _________________ "i know philip banks": todd ellis

Yeah, it certainly wouldn't be the snap... This is interesting. Barring an inadvertent settings change (e.g., moving a software input slider accidentally), it's tough to see what's happened.
One thing I just remembered: with the UAD Apollo, I used to occasionally (maybe twice a year) experience a drastic input change. Suddenly, the device would change its input settings to maximum, and I would hear an ear-splitting wail as a feedback loop began. Not pretty, and maddening. They seemed to have fixed that issue, which I've heard other VOs talk about as well. So it's certainly *possible* that your device is resetting its input on its own because of a glitch. _________________ Jack Daniel

Check your cables Todd. This looks like an impedance drop (or short).
Wish'n you luck on that one.

You might want to set a restore point on your system since it's working again. |

I had that issue with a mic pre I tried years ago...I don't remember exactly what it was, but I do remember it randomly dropping like 5dB and bouncing back up later. I ended up getting a replacement from the store and then taking it back because the new one did it too. I replaced cables and that fixed it
Love me some LYXpro XLR cables Might as well be Mogami but at Hosa prices. |
