Does anyone know how long the Source Connect Standard license is good for?
Does it include upgrades?
I scoured their site but it's a mess and couldn't find that info.
Been paying the $35 subscription but thinking about buying outright.

The license if for life, or until SC goes under, which it doesn't look like it'll do any time soon. I bought the license outright a couple of years ago after realizing I was flushing money down the toilet with the subscription.
I'm guessing they will raise the price soon. I would.
Bear in mind, though, you will still have to pay a quarterly support fee (I think it's 28 dollars) if you want support.Still, buying SC is a much better deal than paying monthly. _________________ Jack Daniel

Hmm... I just did the maths...
I got mine in early 2017 and would have paid at least 50 monthly $35 subs... a total of $1,750. As it was, I paid $600 (or was it $650?). I'm pretty sure you're covered for minor maintenanve upgrades, but major ones are payable (I'm on 3.9). They're currently offering upgrades from 3.8 to 3.9 for $89. I suspect they'll be looking for a couple of hundred when 4.0 comes out (if you want to upgrade).
Basically, if you pay the single fee and keep it 18/20 months, you're ahead of the game. _________________ Bish a.k.a. Bish

I remember paying about $3,500 for my ISDN unit a dozen years ago or more. Soon I'll be turning it over to and electronics recycler because there's no market for it. (small tear shed every time I think about it.)
$600 bucks for many years of trouble-free quick connections with clients, and no separate equipment, and the majority of studios must have it by now. If you want to do work with the outside world Source Connect Standard is a must have in my book.

Thanks for the clarification, Bish.
And Balky, though I agree Source Connect Now sounds great, most studios require the paid version. _________________ Jack Daniel

Thanks for doing the maths. I need to cough up the one time fee. I so hate subscription services. GRRRR _________________ Pam Tierney

Source Connect Standard, the type most of us have, does upgrade their software and charge for it. They also stop supporting older versions. The current version is 3.9. Here’s a chart of the upgrade prices for Mac:

Our friend Liz de Nesnera reports:
Quote: | To all my VO friends:
If you have SourceConnect Standard:
NOTE: Source-Connect 3.0 - 3.7 versions will no longer work after July 16th.
You have to upgrade. I got an email for a 20% discount on the perpetual licence (Since I use it so often, I bought it outright years ago). Check your emails! #TheMoreYouKnow. |

Yes, the license is for life.
About 7 years ago I bought SC Pro on the suggestion of a studio owner that operates a facility approx 50 miles from me, where I had been commuting to for years. . . a 100 mile round trip. We'd been testing the free beta version for a while and it was working well. But they wanted a higher sample rate.
The goal was to eliminate the commute, be available for quick turnaround,
( it was political season ) and accomplish the best quality link we could.
It was pricey but it paid for itself the first week of use. And when the Covid shutdown hit, and editors and producers all over the country started working from home, no one was using ISDN anymore since they didn't have the lines at their homes. So they turned to Source Connect. And a whole new group of users joined the club. Now, it's pretty much standard operating procedure for them. |
