I have to agree with Greg Allen, although the name "dbx" has been synonmyous with good thing, this is not one that qualifies. To my ears it sounds metallic.
I do like (and use) the Avalon...
The Firbox Pre... well. it works...
To each their own!

This is interesting - the DBX and the Avalon had a similar sound to me - the Firebox sounded "thinner" - less bassy to my ears.
I use the DBX mini-pre for my laptop studio with my AKG1000 and it works very well on the road.

| MP3s color sound so much that it's hard to tell what the heck I'm hearing... the mic pre? The MP3 encoding scheme? . How about short WAV files instead? |

It was weird... my wife's grandfather passed away recently and we were helping to straighten out his belongings when we came across a whole cabinet in the basement stuffed with old CB gear. It was deja vu, over.
I got to thinking about C.W. McCall--remember Convoy?--who, as it turns out, is tha same buy behind Manheim Steamroller.
But back to the topic (I think)... anbody else on the list not happy with the sound of MP3s? Or should I up my medication? |

I hate to say it, but I can't tell any real difference between an mp3 at 160kbps or higher, and a wav file. I think I hear a little thinness or distortion at 128k, but it's probably my mind playing tricks on me. Below 128 things certainly deteriorate.

It's interesting that you bring this up today, because I was thinking exactly the same thing yesterday! I recorded an audition for a local client, and as requested converted it into a 128kbps, 44.1khz mp3 file. There was absolutely no processing or eq on the original track, but by the time it made its way into mp3, it sounded quite muddy and like I had compressed the heck out out of it, where the original track was very clear and possibly a tad on the "hot" side.
It's not of big concern as it is an audition, however it was a b it concerning in terms of how it would reflect on the quality of recordings thatt I'm capable of producing in my home studio...
I began playing around a bit (as I am apt to do on a Sunday afternoon since I'm not a football fan!) and came to the conclusion after playing the file using a couple of different sound cards, that it wasn't the mp3 conversion that was the issue, it was the sound card on which it was playing. As with our dicussions regarding pre-amps, it is quite apparent to me now that each sound card adds its own "color" to the track... When I imported the mp3 back into ProTools and played it as a track, the sound was nice and clean with very little appreciable difference between the mp3 and original wav file.
Just some food for thought!

It begs the question: Was the soundfile in mono or stereo? |
