I took the survey, and because it was anonymous, I was willing to admit how pitifully little I make doing voiceovers. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.

I have no stats, and wouldn't care much if I did, but there does seem to be an inverse relationship between the fervency of posting about work and actual earnings. The few exceptions do not change this, they just mildly muddy the waters. I do think the willingness of people to go public is genre-related: big names in animation and games are expected to tout their work. But in the world of movie trailers, for instance, I can think of only one top earner who makes social media announcements; the rest of those big $$ rakers keep it quiet. Same with TV promo, including affiliates. You wouldn't necessarily know much of anything about the $million+ elite other than their favorite eateries.
The next level down, which I would consider the 200k - 750k band, consists of similarly industrious but non-touting folk who know there are more downsides to crowing than potential upsides. Is there a legitimate business reason for posting that the buyer agrees with? If the answer is no, well...
Again, this is from my experience with the people I know, think I know, or pretend to know after two fingers of scotch. It's not a large sample, in part because the number of big earners is pretty darned small. _________________ Jack Daniel

There's always an "unless"... and in this case, the public embiggening of one's achievements tends to influence newcomers and enable the age-old pursuit of wallet-diving for services rendered... "Why, of course I offer coaching services!"
Call me cynical, but I honestly believe that in most cases anyone pushing VO success on social media is either selling, or planning to sell, services to newcomers. A high-profile social media presence that trumpets success is simply marketing to other VOs. _________________ Bish a.k.a. Bish

Agreed. There, it might make business sense; though not without cost. _________________ Jack Daniel

Could not agree more! Many, if not most of the top vo actors in the business are very active on social media, and you will never read any of them posting what they earn, their earnings from year to year, etc. It's just vulgar and tacky. Dangling this carrot is a very common selling point to study or partake in sites like Fiverr. And they know there's an audience who finds this inviting as more and more newer generations are more romanced by making a buck at vo than being great at vo. It's a vicious cycle which after time has become conditioning. |

You're being tacky and vulgar, stop it at once!

The group that conducted the survey is doing another one this year and they're hoping to expand their survey area. If anyone here wants to take it, I'm sure that can be arranged. _________________ Lee Gordon, O.A.V.
