Everyone is lead to believe that a voiceover agent/manager is the way to riches or at the very least a degree of financial security. Here's my personal reality check. No indictment on the professionalism or commitment of the people who are out there pitching for me and others; they're out there in the market doing their best every day.
If you conduct an analysis of your business there is no good news, bad news or advice, only information to be interpreted.
If I spend £2.50 on a Euro millions Lottery ticket today I may win £150 million, unlikely but ... So the only decision I have to make is should I win nothing can I afford to take a £2.50 hit? Yep, I'm good.

Agents have been useful to me in getting re-use fees. They have "ticklers" that seem to alert them to ask clients if they're still using my work. Oh and they also get 10% to 20% for their efforts... additional motivation.
Other than that, close zero new projects per year. They do submit me for jobs I otherwise wouldn't hear about... me and dozens if not hundreds of other candidates.
So yes, the comparison with buying lottery tickets is a fair one.

I think it just depends on the career. You cannot pursue animation without an agent, and probably without one of the top (less than) 10. But for the day to day vo actor around the country, I think you all get your own work far more than agents. It's much harder today to secure a top agent, so if one can have a career without one you are probably better off. |
