Most of our outages only last hours so we get by with UPS batteries. However we’ve had a couple of day long events so I’m aiming for something more substantial. I don’t want to mess with gasoline so I’m looking at propane and natural gas generators and smaller than whole house battery units. I’ll probably decide after our next big outage. We’re expecting a substantial ice storm tonight through tomorrow. We’ll see.

I bought my Mother In-Law a 3500w that runs on propane OR gas. Propane is super easy - just push the button.

After 10 years of living through power outages of most of all of a day in length, we had a whole house backup generator installed this year. It's tied in to our natural gas service, so no take to re-fill.

We have tested it, and if things hold true, I suspect we'll have it in use later today. The ice and wind from this storm are very likely to have us without power at some point before long.

All of the power lines in our neighborhood are underground, but the lines that feed THOSE lines are above ground and vulnerable to everything from squirrels on up the damage charts.

So far so good. A half inch of ice and pellets but much less wind.

When we moved up to the side of Tiger Mountain a buncha years ago, my father insisted we acquire a whole-house natural-gas generator. Up to and including paying for part of it when we balked at the expense, which we eventually repayed.

It has come in handy more times than I can count now. Especially for the few 5+ day outages we've had up here.

Make sure to check the oil every 6 months and flush if needed. Sometimes the oil can build up humidity and moisture and it looks a bit milky. Ultimately it'll damage the engine if not maintained. Those can also be programmed to test once a week and it'll show a light signal if something is wrong. Very worth it depending on where you live.

Every day at Ellis Brothers Farm you play the "will it start" game, but this cold had been wacky! I had to use ether to get a tractor started - even with the block heater & had to move the air compressor into the bunkhouse to get it warm enough to start!

On a side note - a family of cats has moved into the barn. So far, I've let them stay!

It was 10° here this morning --- gonna be 60° on Thursday ... wacky!

We had a whole house generator installed in 2017, and I am SO happy about it.
Had to pay extra for the install, because the "optimal" place for it was right outside my studio window! Ummmm...nope. Rolls Eyes

So we had it installed on the side of the garage, at the other end of the house.

Like Bob we have a service contract, and it does a self test one a week. It has become automatic for me to check the little green light when I pull into the driveway!
