I've had this happen to me twice over the past several years... my recording system had a difficult to diagnose sudden failure to record. The computer and recording software looked fine, the mics (I tried a couple to see if that was the problem) were reaching my MOTU digital unit. They just weren't talking to each other. Then finally a bell went off in my head but at 6 p.m. (damn you Firewire!) but it's hard to find a slowly-fading-in-popularity piece of kit. Huzzah! Amazon delivered one at 7:30 this morning and my jobs today were saved!
$8 in preventative maintenance Firewire replacement will save you from an expensive headache.

I loved my MOTU 896mk3! I was sad to see it go in the latest round of update and (upgrade???).
The good news is, I went from 8,426 cables to 5. So ... that's something, I guess. _________________ "i know philip banks": todd ellis

Thanks for posting that! I'll file that in the back of my brain in case anything like that ever happens. My primary recording desk is a firewire unit into a PC firewire card and I know at some point it'll give up the ghost and be unusable but I'm hanging on for dear life. |
