This is a good lesson in knowing what your your market value is. A good starting point is $100 for a spot in a local market. If someone will pay you that amount, with the next new customer raise the rate $25. If they pay that amount ($125), the next time raise it another $25. And so on, until a few turn you down becuase your rate is too high. Then you will know your worth in a local market.
Unfortunately, sometimes this system forces people in another direction. |

No, it's not just cheap it's scary.
$5.00 per spot means that if you do 1000 spots per month you have grossed $5,000. That is a lot of work for 5 G's. However, the quality is not exceptional... so it could be done.
Although I do not do Voice Tracking now, when I did it would take approximately 1 hour to track a four hour show. So, 10 stations = 10 hours - PER DAY...
Again a lot of work and little gain.
Sweepers, hmmm, don't know if I want to go there.
The concept is sound, and could be a good supplement to his income.
Would I hire this guy - probably not.
On the other hand, if it were $25.00 per spot at say - 250 spots per month (12 spots per day based upon a 22 workday month) equalling a total of $6250.00 per month... that is almost livable - depending upon your expenses. Remember, this is based upon 12 spots per day being ordered and completed - and assumes that of your 20 stations contracted - 12 will send you one spot per working day. Realistically, you would need 45 stations to get 12 spots per day
Would I hire the guy in the second scenario... again, probably not. Each of the above is selling himself too cheaply - "pay little, get little".
Either of these scenarios would work for 'some" small market radio stations, but you won't get into the big leagues doing that kind of work for that kind of pay. But, it is almost a living.....

All I know is that in the late '80s they were selling the world's cheapest car, the Yugo.
It was, technically speaking, a car. To say it was much more than that would be a gross exaggeration.

Yup, the ole Internet is kinda changing the playing field. Here's a guy doing spots for five dollars a holler. The funny thing is, he's now got a link on this board, and a post thats debating his business model. Now that's a chapter right out of "The Long Tail." |

Commercial productions and sweepers... same voice... all the time... every time... annoying.
On-Air recordings... should stay there.
$5 a holler... nice gimmick... but you will definitely get your $5 worth. _________________ "Bailey"

Hmmmm....lessee now.....a self employed kinda guy has to pay federal income tax, social security - both halves, and a whole heaping bunch of other stuff.
If he is paying all his federal, state and local taxes, he is left with around a dollar a hollar. Oh well, I'm sure he makes it up in the volume. |

Consumer Reports called the Yugo, "A barely assembled bag of parts."
On the cheap voice tracking thing, if he did basically the same show for all the stations and just 'flew in' the call letters--as Delilah does on her syndicated show--he could save a ton of time. So if he could do a four hour show in a half hour, then he might be doing OK.
A few years ago I was approached by a group wanting to voice track a gaggle of Internet radio stations for something like a thousand a month. The first month was where all the heavy lifting was done. After that it was just a couple hours a month doing updates. For some reason I let it slide and by the time I called them they were out of business. Don't know what the moral of that story is but it did let me practice my keyboarding skills. |
