|

Hey there everyone. I felt it was time for me to offer up my commercial demo for review. This was put together before I lost my easy connections with the local FM radio station where I did on-air work.

I look forward to all of your wisdom. I already have learned a good bit being a part of this board just a few months. I am signed up for James Alburger's 8 week tele-course starting next week to further increase my abilities and knowledge. _________________ Try to imagine a world where there is no such thing as hypothetical situations.

I believe your sound could be very engaging and hence very marketable.
What I've just heard was you reading aloud with the mistakes edited out. It is how you sound today but it isn't a commercial demo or a demo of any description. It's not bad, it's simply not ready for the market. The best way to hear this for yourself is to do the "in context test". Take 3 good genuine commercials and one of your commercials and put them together so it sounds like a break, put your read in spot 2 or 3. How do you sound?
Something to think about. When reading a script do the words sound like they belong in your head, in your mouth?
Really hope that helps. If you want to save money and have MSN messenger and a mic I'll give you a "teleclass"!!!! |

Tom,
Everyone knows something I can learn. Thank you for the offer. I accept. Once I graduate (assuming I do) from Banksey's academy, I'll come calling on you. _________________ Be well,

Tom,
Those who teach are those who learn the most. The best way for you to learn from me is to teach me what you know. You'll see. _________________ Be well,

Deirdre,
You're right. I'm guilty as charged. I will attempt to make amends post haste.
Bob,
I've finally been able to listen to your demo. I think you do have a very marketable sound. But, I hear a lot of the "radio guy" in your delivery. Studying with quality teachers will move you forward a long way. James will be able to help you. He's a good teacher. (I suspect Philip will be harder, but even more effective should you take him up on his offer.) _________________ Be well,

Thanks everyone.
It took me until this afternoon to "look" at what comments came in from my posting. I purposely stayed away so that I could see more than one comment at a time, or allow a good conversation to be generated and I believe that's exactly what happened.
Banksey,
I appreciate the compliment you gave me in your first sentence. From you and for that matter from anyone that is regular on this board, that means a lot.
I would be HAPPY to do a teleclass with you! It is very possible we could do this over the phone since I use Vonage and the UK is now part of that area I can call without an additional charge. If not, I do have MSN messenger (also ICQ, Yahoo, AOL, AIM. Can you tell I work in the computer field?) It actually took me a couple of reads of your comments to get a grasp of what you are saying. More conversation is definitely needed on my part.
Bob Souer,
I think it is I that should be the "Other Bob" since you certainly are senior to me in the VO world. I'm more like "Bob the XIII" or something like that.
I'm sure I can gain a good bit from you as well and our meetings could be face-to-face since we are both in Charlotte. I am learning more and more how I need to grow into the VO world and remold or unlearn some of that which I use on stage and on the air. I see now how I really wasn't ready for this demo.
I also appreciate your good words. If any of you believe my voice is marketable, then I believe it. Now to train the rest of me!
Deirdre,
Thanks for recommending I do this. I was going to hold off until after my teleclass with James, but you helped me decide that there is no time like the present.

Bob,
I'd be very happy to meet with you. Please email me or call me after the 15th of this month and we'll work out a mutually agreeable place and time. _________________ Be well,
