After the mp3 is cut and sent...

For commercials, narration... etc?

One on the house? 1/2 the original rate?

What's your approach, what keeps you and the client happy?

As a general rule if it's my mistake I pay, if the client has made an error or wants to change something then he pays at least the minimum session fee.

Needless to say one has to be grown up about this and maintain good will.

If a client kicks up a fuss I often suggest the following. Do a quick costing on the booking a voice over through an agent, booking a studio and attending the session to ensure you get what you want.

The difference between the costing and your charge is the financial penalty imposed on you for working from your own studio and being available to make changes at short notice - Remind me why we should be penalised for this.

Boy howdy-- this needs to be spelled out in advance.

With narrations I usually allow a set number of lines re-done gratis. After that, a per-line or per-finished-minute fee kicks in at a reduced rate, between 50% and 75% of normal.

For commercials, it all depends on the client.
A complete re-do is usually necessary with a spot and a session is a session. On the other hand, good will is good will, so it's really your call.

Tom,

For certain clients and specific situations, I make "revisions included at no additional charge" part of my initial agreement. This is because there are certain kinds of projects where giving the client a fixed budget from which to work makes a huge difference in landing the work in the first place and winning repeat business from those same clients.

For example, I can point to two new clients from the last 6 months who have combined for nearly $15,000.00 in income. Both told me my offer regarding free revisions was the deciding factor in casting me. Both have hired me repeatedly for additional work, now that the relationship is established. All of this has been non-broadcast.

But, commercials and all projects booked through my agents involve additional fees for revisions. Commercials usually at full rate. Non-broadcast at a reduced rate, depending on the size of the revisions.

I also tend to allow a certain number of lines for free, but beyond that will mostly just add it to the word count as that's how I normally charge. If it's a bigger chunk of text then I might just throw them back my minimum rate and see if I can hear them squeal.
If it's a commercial or another short piece like on-hold and the change involves pretty much a total re-record then it's anything from 50% up to full whack depending on how much I like the client, how much they like me, how much the utilities were last month and how good the weather is outside.

For me, add "depending upon which side of the bed I woke up on that morning".

Althugh I am fairly easy to get along with (NOT!). My revision rate is something I discuss with clients at the outset. Usually this is mentioned in passing, but I do get a comment or two in, expecially with "new clients". I do not want any mis-understandings. Taht rate will depend upon many, if not all of the circumstances listed by our estemed colleagues.

The question is why I have contractual agreements which spell things out - in writing.

It sounds like a perfect opportunity for some of us noobs to collect up discarded sacks of money while all the professionals are in Vegas for VOICE.

I'll order my new BMW Z4 now so it can be delivered by the end of March. I'll be able to pay cash for it then.
