From what I can tell in my personal life, the most certain thing I can do to ensure that I will need to be in Burbank for a big audition, or that I'll book a last-minute radio spot is to...
eat cheese.
In fact, any time I eat any dairy product I am almost guaranteed to need to use my now-useless voice for a sack of cash within the hour. I'd stop eating dairy, but I need the work. Catch 22.

So true, or plan a vacation...
Every time I plan a little get-away - I get work - too much to turn down, and yet, not enough to keep me from taking my mini-vacation. I think I need to plan more "away time"...

It's the same way with me ... only it's scotch. It's only when I'm good and buttered that someone wants me to read words like "heterogeneity" and "asynclitism" ... you'd think people would have the decency not to call after 10:30am. _________________ "i know philip banks": todd ellis

It's been awhile since I've posted, but this one definitely kinda hit home for me... having just recently moved from Calgary to Vancouver.
For me it's been the fact that I've finally moved away from what used to be my "local market"... I hadn't really focussed my energies on marketing myself locally (in Calgary, Alberta), as the pay isn't that great, and innevitabley I haven't received much work from the market, but goodness knows I've been moved away from Calgary for just over a week and in the last 2-days I've been contacted by 3 Calgary production houses to complete projects for them. Of course I can't do them at their studio, but home studios do have their benefits!
I told one client, that if I knew all it would have taken to get more work from him was to move, I'd have staged a fake "relocation" ages ago!
It is definitely odd how the perception that "out of town" talent must be better than what exisits locally! I guess it's the fresh ocean air that makes me automatically more "desirable".
What on odd business we all love in... I mean work in... I mean spend time enjoying!
Happy voicing all!

Vacation has been a sure way to get work for me on occasion. I think I've relayed this one before, but I went to Florida just after Christmas a few years ago, that being a traditional down time for me, and my agent called with 4 or 5 TV VO's for the Arizona Lottery and I had to hunt down an ISDN studio in Ft. Lauderdale....to do spots for my home state. They were union spots and renewed a number of times, therefore totally paying for the trip. I need to take more vacations I guess.
The throat surgery hasn't slowed things down a lot either, even though I told most of my regulars I'd be out for a couple of weeks. Luckily a number of them have been willing to postpone. I've been able to produce a couple of spots so far with other voices so that's been a pleasant diversion.
The voice is slowly coming back, by the by. I get impatient with that...also with trying to shake the effects of the anasthesia, but then I realize it's only been 8 days. So, patience, patience.

I just came home from a cheese-induced audition (for a new Suzanne Somers infomercial) and couldn't wait to see you guys. I love my boardy buddies! You guys really make me smile. And Todd, after 10:30 indeed! What do they expect?
Has anyone scouted out emergency ISDN digs near our Vegas getaway, by the way?

I feel like an expectant father. My first "real" mic is supposed to arrive tomorrow. In celebration of this event I am going to follow the lead of the other posters in this thread. I have scheduled a vacation, ordered a case of Scotch and a huge wheel of cheese. If I don't get work out of this at least I will be lying on a beach somewhere, drunk and bloated. All-in-all a nice break in the day.
BTW - Welcome back Bruce. So glad you are on the mend. _________________ Ron Phillips

It's the vacation that does it for me everytime. I need to figure out how to make an inflatable, fully soundproofed room for the beach that also doubles as a floaty.
you know, somebody should warn the ISDN studios in Vegas that we're coming.
PS. Tickets for Spamalot - at Wynn - have just gone on sale and there's a show at 10:00pm on the 27th. That's an hour after the end of the meet & greet. I've got mine. Second row, right in the middle

I have already told one group in Vegas that I work with - Mind Theatre - that there will be a conference. I'll see if I can get us a group rate! _________________ Playing for a living...

Did you book on the Wynn website? I'm booking mine now... Ok. I think Mike got better seats than I did. Orchestra L B1.

Perfect. That is the surefire strategy for success! The mic is, frankly, secondary to the Scotch and the cheese.

No, I couldn't use the website booking as I'm outside the US. I spoke to a real person who was kind enough to give me "...a great seat."
Cool. I'm glad your going. Share a taxi?
