CCITT A-Law, 8000 8 bit, mono .wav
I am vexed.
I used to only get 8000 16 bit requests, now a rash of 8000 8 bit. There is just too much NOISE at 8 bit. Is there anything I can do?
#2, I can't seem to be able to save (using Audition, Goldwave, or Awave) to 8 bit A-Law. I can only get it to 8000 16 bit, no matter what I do.
I am so lame! Please dear Flying Spaghetti Monster, can anybody help this poor, pathetic girl?

I think there are several topics about this, but here goes:
When you have completed recording the file, save as: A/muLaw Wave > click on options > choose A-Law 8-bit. Then save, as usual.
When you open the file up it will read like a 16 bit file, but will be ACTUALLY an 8 bit file for telephone purposes.
DO NOT SAVE AS AN 8 BIT FILE. Just do your normal 16 bit thing.
"The A-Law and mu-Law WAV formats (CCITT standard G.711) are common in telephony applications. These encoding formats compress the original 16-bit audio to 8-bit audio (for a 2:1 compression ratio) with a dynamic range of about 13-bits (78 d . While A-Law and mu-Law encoded waveforms have a higher signal-to-noise ratio than 8-bit PCM, they also have a bit more distortion than the original 16-bit audio. Still, the quality is higher than you would get with some 4-bit ADPCM formats.
Note: Files saved in this format expand automatically to 16-bits when opened, so you shouldn't save 8-bit files in this format.
Options
* A-Law 8-bit is a slight variation of the standard mu-Law format and is found in European systems."
Toodles
