So while I'm always looking for new, interesting and innovative ways to market my services, here's one that almost happened by mistake.
A few weeks ago, a local radio station was having their annual holiday auction, which moved online for the first time this year. Looking over the items, I saw one that appeared to be worth bidding on:
"Your voice and likeness in a video game! Winning bidder will attend a 3-D modeling session and will make a cameo appearance in an upcoming major video game release."
My first thought was "Cool, I can be in a video game." And I'll admit, the little marketer in the back of my head said "Hmmm, that's a whole lot better way in the door than sending a demo CD...maybe I can get some work out of this." But that was just a fleeting thought, and I decided that the charitable donation and the chance just to be in the game were more than enough. Fast forward a couple of weeks:
I win the auction and meet the producer and designer of the game. During our "3-D modeling session" (aka "taking pictures") I casually mention that I do voiceovers. Oh, and I just happen to have a demo here if you'd like to give it a listen.
The next week they call to ask if I'd be interested in an expanded role in the game (uhhhhh, yEAh!), and could I make it to a recording session for a character they'd like me to voice, at least for the game demo (uhhhhh, yEAh!!!).
So anyway, it hasn't turned in to real work yet, but it seems like there's a pretty good chance that it will. At the very least, I'll have a copy of the game demo to use on my next VO demo, and I can always post the video on my website.
Damn, if I'd only known that getting work was as easy as paying for it, I'd have started doing this years ago! |
