So I'm putting together a commercial demo reel. Problem is, I've never done any commercials.
Is it ethical/legal to use copy from actual commercials, voice them, add music and FX, and put them in my reel? Wouldn't that be implying that I actually did that company's commercial? _________________ Jeff

Jeff,
People will know you're not the voice on the real spot. How well you pull off your version will determine whether they think "fake" or "Hmmm. He did that quite well" or "Wow!"
It's for this reason that many folks prepare their own copy, through judicious use of magazine ad copy, recording some television broadcasts and other sources, for their first commercial demo. Find segments that don't include the advertiser's name. It's not that tough. _________________ Be well,

Bob got it right. My first VO coach helped me out a bit by providing old copy and we kept the advertiser's name or product out of it. Additionally, we made sure not to use the same BG music unless it was royalty free (actually... everything was royalty free, which is why we used it; just making the distinction is all). _________________ Voiceovers by Gregory Houser
