Well, yesterday, actually.
So there I am in the middle of the 6pm local news when all of a sudden I hear this brief, yet obvious ringing sound. The fact that it was accompanied by an equally brief vibration in my pocket quickly confirmed my suspicions. I had set an alarm on my cell phone to remind me to administer my eye drops (cataract surgery last Tuesday) and totally forgot to disable the alarm. I don't get a cell phone signal in the studio, so I never even bother to turn the phone off. But evidently, the alarm works whether the phone is on or off. Normally, I guess that would be a good thing...
Since I was sitting down and wearing jeans, I couldn't easily get into my pocket to retrieve the phone. And if I could, the sound would have been even louder when I removed it while fumbling to turn off the alarm, which I couldn't have done while continuing to read anyway. So there I was squirming in my seat, trying to muffle the alarm with my left hand over my left pocket, leaning over to my left to use the seat cushion for a little more muffling, and moving the script pages as needed with my right hand. And of course, it isn't happy to ring once or twice and then stop. It kept going for the duration of the newscast. Thankfully, it was just a 3 minute local break. I have no idea what I was reading (not unusual), but I'm sure it would have been an interesting sight to walk in the studio with me squirming around it my seat.
I kept waiting for the to come strolling in, but he never did. Needless to say, the phone alarm is now on "vibrate only". |

Of course what you could have done is bring the phone closer to the mic and announce "We have an important news story coming in...." and then read the next story. But as luck would have it the next story would be about some starlet not wearing her underwear or some 114 year-old Japanese woman is now the world's oldest person.
Well, it was a thought.

Or I guess I could have paused, excused myself and said "Yes, Mr. President...". |

Or turned to your co-host (assuming you have one) and said
"It's the commissioner! To the bat cave!" _________________ Try to imagine a world where there is no such thing as hypothetical situations.
