Just got this link from a co-worker. Warning...there's some colorful language after they cut back to Stern and friends (about 2/3 of the way through). The point is well made by then, though...

That was hilarious. I loved the way Shatner just started screwing with the guy. Thanks for posting that and thanks to Howard for airing it!

Oh man...I felt really bad for the guy behind the glass...
After THAT mind game, if he weren't Capt. Kirk, he'd never get hired as a VO by that company again!

OutSTANDING!

He did what we all wish we could have done. The captain has some stones and bless him that he can get away with it!

I can't say that I feel too bad for the director. Once you give up control to the talent, you're usually up a creek.

Especially if the talent is vindictive or mischievous, worse yet... both (read: actors)

wow, what a blooper's soap that turned into

"Give up control to the talent"?????

He gave a freakin' LINE READING to WILLIAM SHATNER.

The "director" is a child with no idea of how to behave.
Would you tell Jack Nicholson how to read? Sean Connery?
A group hires William Shatner because they want William Shatner, and the mornic "direction" is especially eggregious given that this was a personal invitation/testemonial-type thing.

Directors like this deserve to be ridden out of town on a rail. He stands to lose his company a great deal of money.

After tracking down the source of the clip (or at least the source that my co-worker used), it appears the guy may be the producer, not director.

Jesus Christ could come off the mothership carrying chicken wings and Jack Daniels. Once he's in my booth, his ass is mine.

...if there needs to be multiple takes, or we want to try something different it will be done, with respect to the talent (which was not shown by the "director" in this clip).

Got no problem with the comments made against the director. That said, a director might want a slightly different read out of a talent like Mr. Shattner... and justifiably so depending on the circumstance.

Was this director a moron? Yep.
Did he disrespect the talent at first? Hell yeah.
Should he be driven out of the studio, possibly the town? Probably.
Did he deserve what he got? You betcha.

That said, he lost control of the situation (a situation he precipitated). Once you lose the respect of your talent, you're doomed. This is especially the case with Shattner, who is well known for his sense of humor.

Edit: Producer you say... behavior makes much more sense now. Carry on. Smile

Were I Bill and had I been around the block as many times AND had someone asked me to use not only my voice, but my NAME as an endorsement of something... I would have expected the person giving me THAT kind of direction to be named "Spielberg", "Coppola", "Scorsese", or at least "Nimoy". Shocked
