I'm supposed to record a couple of spots for Miller beer on Tuesday (woohoo!) and Friday night I started feeling sick. I've been doing everything I should be doing to get rid of it, but I'm still nervous that I won't sound "normal" on Tuesday AM.
I saw this post...
http://www.vo-bb.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=2166&highlight=congested
...where "external nasal dilators" were discussed and I'd like to get some. Anybody use these and have a brand recommendation? I found something on the web about a brand called Breathe Right.
Any personal experiences here?
Thanks! _________________ Lou Zucaro

As an update to my own post here, I bought the things at Walgreens this morning. They had two kinds...with and without menthol.
I tried one of the non-menthol ones and for the life of me, couldn't notice a darn thing except that the two springy bands were sorta pulling my nostrils open. This was, at best, an odd feeling.
I tried the scratch-n-sniff action with the strip of whatever stuff it is and never noticed anything even remotely like Vap-O-Rub. Maybe the menthol ones work better. I'll try them tonight when my fiancee isn't watching _________________ Lou Zucaro

Hey Lou!
OK...disclaimer...I'm not a Doctor, although I have played one for a drug company video!
I swear by ZICAM Cold Remedy - you should be able to find it at Walgreens
Also
"Throat Coat" Herb Tea by Traditional Medicinals
Lots of rest & fluids!

Followed by a chaser of 500mg of Beta Carotene, and some warm (but not hot) tea).
Seems to do the trick for me |
Zicam Spray, or lozenges, but NOT the nasal gel or nasal swabs... nothing that goes IN your nose. I've read Zicam can "allegedly" permanently destroy your sense of smell (and possibly taste??). Zicam has had to pay out ove $12M according to the Washington Post.

Does that include frozen peas?
(when I was a kid, my neighbor friend, for some unknown reason, thought she'd stick a couple of frozen peas in her nostrils...then she freaked out and her mom couldn't get them out so she had to be taken to the hospital to have them removed) _________________ Lou Zucaro

I tried those external nasal dilator strips once, to see if they would stop the terrible snoring that my wife says I do. That night I didn't snore, but the roaring sound of manic overbreathing was so bad my wife insisted I never use the strips again!
I'm a great believer in steam inhalation as a way of easing the inflammation of the nasal passages. Drop a couple of menthol crystals (NOT to be confused with Crystal Meth!!) into the boiling water if you wish, but it's the steam that does you the real good. That plus a great increase in the water intake. And Zinc supplements. And Vitamin C. And Vocalzone lozenges for cutting through the throat crap. _________________ Charles Nove

Be careful with the Menthol. It sometimes dries the membranes and can hide over use.
If someone in the home is complaining about snoring, immediately ask your doctor about the symptoms of Sleep Apnia. It is a very deadly condition that will shorten you life.
(I found out I had it as I played a recording my wife made of my snoring on the air as I interviewed an expert on snoring. He was quite humorous until I asked him what advice he would give the snorer on the tape. He became deadly serious and said, "I would tell them to immediately call a neurologist and schedule a sleep test because they are going to suffer severe heart problems." Turns out he was right.) _________________ Wild Willie Edwards

I did a couple of times. It just left me with that same feeling I get after water accientally gets in my nose while swimming. But I know voiceover people who say they get great results from using one. |

Thanks to James Alburger's book, I'm a big fan of it. After a few times, I got the hang of it and don't get that "swimming pool up the nose" feeling afterwards. I just got tired of ingesting things to feel better, so it was worth a try.
