Oh lordy lordy...
Ok, SO, after working on The Beast for 7 hours on Saturday, today I decided to get the RAID array set up.
Oops.
Guess what you CAN'T do with this motherboard? You can't have some SATA drives on the RAID and others not on it. And if you use the SATA ports for RAID, you can't use a SATA optical drive (DVD burner) on one of the ports either.
Seriously? Yes, seriously.
But...this particular motherboard also happens to have a secondary SATA RAID port and IDE controller.
A ha!
A relatively simple fix, then.
1) Install an IDE drive on the IDE interface (using a standard IDE ribbon cable), move the SATA DVD drive to the secondary SATA controller interface.
2) REINSTALL WIN XP (ugh)
But it does seem to work. Doing Windows Updates AGAIN but the boot disk is now a 320GB IDE drive, and data will go on the 700+ GB RAID-5 array.
The beauty of how it all worked out is that I didn't need to feed the XP installation any RAID drivers via floppy during setup...which is good, because I didn't include a floppy drive in this machine.
Anybody still awake? _________________ Lou Zucaro

Well at least this go-round took a lot less time...physically, the machine was already built and I decided it'd be worth $99 to get a copy of XP that already had SP2 on the disc. At least two hours saved. _________________ Lou Zucaro

Hmmmm...
And the reason for going with a RAID-5 is.. ???? _________________ Try to imagine a world where there is no such thing as hypothetical situations.

I won't speak for Lou, but I know my main reason was for redundancy. |

That is correct, sir...the SATA 3.0Gb has good performance natively and the RAID-5 adds data security. _________________ Lou Zucaro

So I finally decided on a mic. Ended up getting the Shure KSM44. I auditioned a handful of mics at the local Guitar Center and that one sounded the best with my voice.
Others in the running were the AT 4040, the AKG Perception 400 and the Shure KSM32.
I did NOT like the KSM32 at all with my voice. The AT 4040 was probably my second favorite, then the Perception 400. I wanted to try the AT 4050 too but they didn't have it in stock.
But I dig the KSM44 so I'm pretty happy. Seem to have gotten a decent price on it, too. _________________ Lou Zucaro

You can get redundancy with RAID-1 w/o the complexity. I personally would rather have fewer drives, so I'd rather have 2 bigger drives mirrored over the minimum of 3 drives striped with parity to do striping properly. But, to each his own. Working in IT, I tend to prefer simplicity when I can get away with it. I'd rather RAID-1 the OS, and just back up the data drives at a regular schedule. I don't need 24/7 availability and faster file access like a server, which is where you normally find RAID-5.
One thing to be aware of. If your drives are stacked, that top drive will get hotter than the others. _________________ Try to imagine a world where there is no such thing as hypothetical situations.

All good points, thanks. I just would rather have the RAID-5 than have to do backups I guess. But they both work _________________ Lou Zucaro

There are a few sites like that. All very good points on how to reduce your noise coming out of your PC. The fewer moving parts you have, the better. That means fans, drives, etc...
It's sort of funny how my PCs have changed. For years it was a statement of "cool" if your computer had lots and lots of fans to cool all the overclocked and overdriven devices inside. For the longest time my goal was always to push the equipment to the edge of failure and beyond. I almost went so far as to build one inside a mini fridge!
I still overclock my processor, but I've backed off on all the other geek stuff to reduce the noise. I've also used some of my knowledge in car stereo work to line the inside of the computer cases to reduce noise now that I want to make money with my home computer instead of just killing a lot of virtual enemies. _________________ Try to imagine a world where there is no such thing as hypothetical situations.

You're kidding! I almost put one in a mini fridge too! I still have the fridge, more or less. It's sitting in a shed in Alabama. _________________ Hart Voice Overs Blog

Ok, now I feel stupid for trying to turn an old PC into a mini-fridge. What is my problem?! _________________ Lou Zucaro

Aw, come on, marriage can't be all THAT bad...if it was, I wouldn't be doing it for the second time, would I? _________________ Lou Zucaro
