In researching my latest blog post, I found my very first reel produced about 3 years ago and boy does it stink. It's too long, the clips are lame, and I wasn't very good behind the mic. It's fun to listen (and cringe) and realize how far I've come and how far I still have to go.

Do you have your first reel laying around? Share 'em if you got 'em! _________________ Jeff

My first reel was recorded in the winter of 1989 at The Ice House Studio, Yeovil, Somerset. The demo was put on to DAT and 1/4, one copy was dubbed to audio cassette. From the audio cassette 50 copies were made and sent to local commercial radio stations around the UK. I did my first voice over session on 28th February 1990 for Red Dragon FM in Cardiff, Wales, about 90 miles from my home. The fee was $130.
On the reel was some (what I now know to be called) imaging, impressions, straight anno bits, invented commercials - Duration 2mins 55 secs.
None of the audio survives.
No experience, no books, no coaching, no idea what I was doing and to be honest, still no idea what I'm doing - Somehow manage to muddle through. |

Amen to that, banksey! nearly the same experience - 'cept it was 1984 - nearly 5 minutes of suck - on a 5" reel and cassette ... happily, no audio survives. I just got rid of a "head-high" stack of 10" reels full of god-knows-what" but they were trashed. i managed to dub 3 to CD - the rest ... gone. _________________ "i know philip banks": todd ellis

I have a little trepidation in posting this. I too found one of those 5 minute demo reels from my past. I cringe to think it was.... (gulp) 30 years ago, when I was but a child on the radio.
Anyway, I edited it down to less than 2 minutes. These spots were all written by me and all voices are mine. Star Wars was a big new thing worth parodying back then as you'll hear in the first spot. I'm still a bit amazed when I hear the last spot. None of the voices were sped up. I guess I had an elastic larynx in those days.

OK Jeff, I'll play. This isn't VO stuff. It's on-air stuff I found circa 1992. I was "THE TOAD" in Idaho Falls. My nighttime sidekick was "Sven". We thought we were sooo cool.
