|
|
For all of us radio folk who grew up watchin.....In stores today is The Best of WKRP in Cincinnati on DVD. They had a big party on Fountain Square in Cincinnati today to celebrate it and I guess had some folks singing the theme song. Check out Cincinnati.com. Some photog actually went out and shot the opening sequence and put it side by side with how it looked back when KRP was on in the 70's. It's set to the song. Pretty neat.

That's very cool...I've never worked in radio, but I loved that show...such great characters and so funny for the time.
Of course some of the jokes don't make sense anymore, like when Herb used to walk out in a hurry and say "If anybody needs me, I'll be in my car..."
Doesn't quite have the same punch since the advent of the cell phone _________________ Lou Zucaro

Now, the real question is: What WKRP character do you see most like yourself?
Andy Travis, program director (Gary Sandy):
Jennifer Marlowe, secretary (Loni Anderson):
Dr. Johnny Fever, morning DJ (Howard Hesseman):
Les Nessman, newsman (Richard Sanders):
Venus Flytrap, evening DJ (Tim Reid):
Herb Tarlek, salesman (Frank Bonner):
Bailey Quarters, promotions assistant (Jan Smithers):
Arthur Carlson, general manager (Gordon Jump)
Me I am more like Andy Travis. Cool, calm and relaxed. As always, not a part of the establishment... and still wearing cowboy boots (or tennis shoes with my suit).
Toodles
Awaiting your perspective...

WKRP...woooo whooooo! The true documentary of life around a radio station.
As for me, it may seem like a contradiction... but I think I fall into two rolls:
Andy Travis... I was a for many, many years which is one side of my personality.
and yet...
Johnny Fever, which as I reflect now, is hard to believe that I was that way as an on-air persona doing morning drive. But I still have the airchecks to remind me.... if I can ever find a reel to reel machine. Yeah, that long ago. _________________ . There was a site somewhere out there bemoaning the difficulty for Fox to obtain licensing for the songs in the originally aired episodes. The last I heard, the episodes that made it to DVD were the same "revised" episodes that have been running in syndication all these years.
Some are rather foamy at the mouth over this. _________________ Greg Littlefield

I see myself most like somebody who should've spent a lot of time around Loni Anderson and Jan Smithers.
I jest, I jest...
I'd probably have to go with a combination of Andy, Venus and Herb. _________________ Lou Zucaro

I am probably Johnny Fever all the way....with shades of Andy every now and then. But I have worked with plenty of Herb Tarlick's in my time... |

I didn't spend a lot of time in radio so I don't have a lot with which to compare but I spent 20 years in TV and "know" EVERY ONE of the station characters from the Mary Tyler Moore show.
I'll bet Courvo "knows" them too.
I sure would like Johnny Fever's coffee cup with all the names marked out. _________________ Ron Phillips

I used to walk by the " Flemm Building" every day at lunch. That's where the 'KRP offices were supposed to be. It's the old Cincinnati Enquirer building. I for one cant wait to see the set. I was in the audience for the show where Hoyt Axton was the guest star. _________________ "When I was your age, we had to dial to get online"

For those of us who worked in small market radio it was just like the TV show only more bazarre! No turkey's but a we dropped one thousand dollar bills from a helicopter at a county fair. The money of course blew into a soybean field, listeners trampled the crop and the station had to pay off the farmer....

I can't really identify with any of them in particular, but I too worked with every one of them many times in many places!
