I got contacted by a relative who has a Chinese friend who speaks fluent English, but with an accent. He wants to get rid of the accent. Any ideas for someone that is a speech coach near Green Bay???

I don't know anyone up there, but while your friend is waiting he could try one of the CD programs out there. I Googled (lose foreign accent) and found some promising looking items.

Who's kidding who, Philip? You Brits have almost more accents than you do people. I've heard you guys talk right after hearing someone else speak:

"Oh, he's from Fulham."

"No I'd say more like West Brompton."

"Well he's definitely from the river side of King's Road."

"You know, I think you're right. I'll bet he was raised in that little flat over the biscuit shop on Eaton Place just beyond Chester Row."

"Second bedroom in the back?"

(Gorlumme!)

Ah the old W1C 4DQ accent! Doesn't stretch as far as other bedsits or Newsagents in the general postal code area because of the Bangladeshi influence.

Youth culture here deems it necessary when making an enquiry to say "Can I awx you a question izzit?"

My sister has just sent her 13 year old daughter to boarding school so she doesn't end up a Chav or a Pikey. Well, you'd do the same innit?

I debated with myself over whether or not to post this, but when I first read your thread title "Speech coach to get rid of accent in Green Bay, WI" I assumed you wanted to get rid of a Green Bay, WI accent.

Hey, I'm from Chicago.

Yah-hey?

Um, to interrupt the tea party and get back to Greg's original question:

Your Chinese friend-in-law can do some of this stuff via telephone if it comes to it, but in-person is indeed much more beneficial.
Some coaches are able to work over the phone and via MP3s rather well.

SamuelFrench.com

Look for Non-Regional English for English as a second language, they may have a series specifically for the region of the world from which your friend comes. A speech coach is a potential waste of money as this requires about an hour or two of dedicated, daily exaggerated muscle (tongue) training.

They're $17 - $30, tape vs. cd, author vs. author.....

Ben-- the "quote" thing refers to wholesale quoting of messages that are directly above your own post.
Ick.

Your use of the quote to pull something from a post elsewhere in the thread is just fine.
