I've been using Audition for about a year and have just encountered a problem with a big static sounding noise when I go to record mode. I've checked sample rates and hardware setup but the problem continues. I can record through same hardware (MAudio Duo) to Sound Forge and then edit and manipulate those files in Audition. I'm pretty sure it's some dumb little setting I haven't figured out yet. HELP!

So the static happens when you hit the record button? Or when you go to playback what you recorded? I'm a little confused.

Also, what does the wave form look like?

It records the static. The WAV file looks flat. If I speak into the mic it shows a voice patern but the static sound stays the same. Here's a link to a short sample. http://home.earthlink.net/~voicejones/static I did a simple "test 1234" into the mic.
Thanks

What is your chain setup?

Dude, that's bizarre. So it all works just fine in Sound Forge? I really have no advice to give on this one, except maybe uninstalling and reinstalling Audition and see if it's magically fixed. Hopefully Steve can do better.

VJ,

I would try to narrow it down a bit more... send a signal to the computer using just the mixer (VLZ) and see if you get the same results, try to eliminate all the possible problems first. I'm not too familiar with the M-Audio Duo so the first thing I would do is eliminate all the extra items in your chain and go from there. I'm assuming you re-booted the computer.

It's not in the audio chain....The audio chain works fine with Sound Forge on the same PC. I'll let you know what I figure out.

Try defragging your hard drive. Or try recording the session to a different hard drive. My Pro Tools rig can sound like that if a session is accidentally set up the on the main drive. Or, you might try clearing your throat.

Did you already try changing the settings in Audition in the audio hardware setup to use different drivers, then saving those settings, then changing them back and re-saving them the correct (original) way?

I appreciate all of the interest and help. The problem was solved by re-installing the software. Apparently a glitch developed within the software and just needed to be re-installed.
Thanks again to all!

I have a tendency to over-think situations like this. I have to remind myself that the simplest approach often yields the solution.

That's called using the "special tool". I used that approach many times in my Navy days... Wink
