I'm loving this thread. A tad off subject, but still in synch with the "quiet" issue for quality recording. My husband is helping me build an isolation booth and I am looking for a quiet vent fan for the booth which does not require any custom fixes once you have it to make it REALLY quiet. I don't trust any of the big box Depot stores if you'll catch my drift. Does anyone have suggestions?

I can't remember who, but one of the major vendors (Whisper Room, Sound Sucker, etc.) had an air conditioner that was designed for what you were doing...

I don't know about the rest of you folks, but I have a naturally high body temperature and a small booth quickly turns into an oven for me.

It was a pricey solution, but seemed like quite the bee's knees.

Well if you cannot find a really really quiet fan, there is always a way to build in a little baffle system in the ventelation path.. kind of like a maze of sound proofing materials..

It's the sound version of the roach motel.. fan noise checks in, but doesn't check out.. Or the Hotel California version...

Hey thanks so far. Thus the reason for the fan- let all that HOT AIR out. Lord knows I generate plenty of it. Claustrophobia is another potential issue, but I work in a very small space already. I am going to use the booth for longer narrations and ISDN sessions, primarily.

Chris, what you said about the air flow "maze" is the 2nd time I heard this suggestion, the first time was from a pro-audio guy.

I've made my own air flow "maze" that sits on the back of my PC. That along with getting the computer off the floor, replacing the P/S with a quieter one and replacing the CPU fan with a quieter one made quite a bit of difference. That and my home made sound booth works great.

On the left are two doors with the acoustic foam mounted that are attached to the wall and pivot to close myself in.

Bobbin,

I have a vocal booth and discovered that while the fan moves air, yes, it doesn't cool it adequately enough and simply sucking in ambient air from the room doesn't quite cut it.

The best solution for me was to have a heating and air contractor come out. He tapped into an air duct with a "T", then ran a flexible, insulated duct down from the attic, through the ceiling and directly into the fresh air intake in my vocal booth. It's super quiet and best of all, cool and comfortable when the A/C is running. It was really my only option, but it turned out to be a less expensive one in the long run, as well.
