Hey folks - is there a general consensus for or against asking for a down payment before you give the client the completed file? In this case this is a small $ short VO for an audiobook. The agreement template I have asks for a 50% down payment, but I don't want to scare them off - I'm working on my first real gig! What do most VO folks do?

I normally let a new client know that I take a 50% deposit up front and ask for the rest net 30 after the job is done. So far it hasn't been met with any resistance. I always qualify it by telling them future work will be billed after the session is completed.

i normally just invoice them for the whole thing. unless it's a BIG job - then i'll get 50% up front.

I rquire 50% upfront via paypal for clients I've never worked with and I've never had an issue. Every client understands. Heck, I just told a client he needs to cough up all of it before I'll do any work. Didn't blink an eye.
