A got a callback from an audition for an animated show and the producer wants me to do another audition with a longer piece of the script while he directs over the phone. Given that this is a further unpaid audition, is this type of callback a frequent occurrence? _________________ Jeff

It can happen from time to time but should only be required or considered by the voice talent/actor when the job is really worthwhile.
I know one actress who was called by an ad agency for an audition, she was called back. She got the job and with the fee + residuals bought a home. |

Never had that happen but I can see there might be a circumstance where a producer or director might want to hear more to be sure (1) you can stay in character and (2) evaluate your ability to take direction. Either way, I think I would consider the second callback a good thing. _________________ . If at first you don't succeed, then bomb disposal probably isn't for you. |

Thanks guys. I'm definitely doing the callback. Since it's one-time buyout, I won't buy a house from the residuals. But it will be the biggest job I've ever had if it pans out. _________________ Jeff

i had it happen to me once before (unfortunately didn't get the part) but it can happen... and probably does more than you might think. usually cause they're having a hard time deciding between you and another talent (or two). you might even have a third. (more than that for the same part, i think, would be rare)
and dave's right... they want to see if you can stay in character (and if you can repeat the character you did in the first audition); and see how well you take direction.
and over the phone is also OK (in case you were wondering). (that's how mine went cause they were in florida and I'm in NY).
Good luck dude! NAIL IT!!! _________________ Jim Feldman

Jeff,
Sounds like a fun opportunity to me. Good luck!
There's nothing saying you can't start out small and work up. With this money buy a cardboard box and draw windows and a door on it. Next gig you can try buying a used dog house. _________________ Try to imagine a world where there is no such thing as hypothetical situations.

This kinda thing is, as Dave said, to check your ability to take direction.
This may include the director asking you to take a "line reading".
This is where the director reads the line to you EXACTLY AS HE WANTS IT HEARD. You give the line back in the character's voice with exactly the same inflections.
Be ready-- the ability/willingness to do this can make or break being cast.
Also be ready to improvise!
Go nuts— and good luck!
edited to fix a rather bizzarro typo. _________________ DBCooperVO.com

Best of luck Jeffrey. Let us know how the call back went, and when you land the gig. Notice I said "when", not, "if". In other words, internally visualize yourself actually being hired and treat it like a real session --as if it were the paid gig. _________________ Bobbin Beam

I agree that it's worth your while to do the call back. Even if you don't get the job it's good experience to be able to take direction etc. Look at it this way if you don't do the call back then you definitely won't get the job. Think positively. As has been suggested visualize yourself doing really well, and being offered the gig. And above all have fun with it.
Tell us how it went, and if you learned anything from the experience.
cheers

Re-read Deirdre's post...it's right on.
This is pretty normal with producers who know what they are doing. Being able to direct and work well with talent is extremely important, and well more than half the battle.
I've been asked this in the past...it's a good thing
Good luck! _________________ Threadjackers local 420

congrats Jeff, looks like things are really starting to pick up for you. I don't think saying good luck has the same negative connotations in VO as it does in theater, so I will say that instead of break a mic. |

bad sign so far. The guy stood me up with no explanation. After I emailed him, he said he'd call me this week to reschedule. We'll see. _________________ Jeff
