I'm going to be flying this summer and want to take some gear with me. I want to take a notebook, my preamp, and mic. I'm a little concerned that the morons of the TSA won't know what any of the stuff is and may not allow me to bring it in carry-on. But due to the sensitive nature of the equipment, I don't want the airlines gorillas tossing it around with regular luggage.
Any advice from those who have done this? _________________ Jeff

i've carried laptop & mic on - no pre, though. my thought is - as long as you leave the fake beard, bathrobe and exploding shoes at home - you'll be ok. i'd allow an extra couple of minutes, though.
my blue snowball DID get a sideways look - but no questions.
i should mention that 8 out of 10 times i fly i am "randomly" selected for a pat-down.
it's fun!
good luck! _________________ "i know philip banks": todd ellis

I'm not too worried about the mic or laptop. Those look recognizable. But my ART Tube preamp is a flat black box with come pretty buttons in front. It looks rather ominous to someone who wants to have something interesting to do such as bust a VO guy. _________________ Jeff

I haven't had any trouble. Just avoid strapping your alarm clock to your preamp.

jeff, just be careful your faberge shampoo, mousse, and curl tamer are in bottles of 3oz or less.
(oh c'mon. you expected that, didn't you?)
actually, i've both checked and carried on my gear (not at the same time) and had no problems.
when i had my nalgene bottle full of water and forgot about it though, i was escorted to the nearest w.c. to empty it, then escorted to the back of the security line again. no problem with my avalanche shovel, however, the large, massive, weapon-like hulking piece of metal
where you headed?? _________________ sitting at #8, though not as present as I'd like to be. Hello!

Jeff,
Over the last several years, when we do a big project that's more than driving distance, we ship the basic necessary gear and arrange to lease anything else we need.
The care must be taken in the packing and most shippers will assist in that department. Get extra insurance.
Usually, it's where you are going when you arrive.
PLAN B: Always have a Plan B.

Size is not the issue. My ART tube preamp is small also. But the TSA goons won't have any idea what it is. Nor your FA-101. _________________ Jeff

I pack sensitive stuff (cameras, mics, hard drives, etc) in my luggage.
I put the little FW drives in socks, wrap the cameras in shirts. If I had a pre-amp, I'd either wrap in in a towel and pack it in the center of my bag, or bubble-wrap and box it and overnight it to myself in LA.
I normally travel with 80 pounds of luggage, so this kinda thing is pretty easily accomplished.
for the uninitiated, QFT means "quoted for truth".
Or "quality face time". _________________ DBCooperVO.com

The few times I've flown with my gear (laptop, firebox, mic) I've gotten some second looks but it's never been a problem. The one that did make them question me was an external hard drive. Weird.
Do allow a few extra minutes though just in case they want to ask questions. _________________ Hart Voice Overs Blog
