One of the things I've been wondering about those of you with pesky day jobs, by offering a phone patch or ISDN or Source Connect, aren't you saying that you're available during work hours? Do you advertise as having that service, but only in the evenings? _________________ Jeff

I never really thought about it, but yes, I guess that's what I'm saying. I don't advertise it...just assume clients know I'm available pretty much 24/7. Never presented itself as a problem.
I got Source-Connect with the hope that someday I'll be able to dump ISDN.

ah, but that's the rub, Jim. I'm not available during work hours (since I have a day job), so I've been hesitant to get Source Connect. Heck, I was hesitant to get phone patch for fear of having to limit my usage of it to after 6pm at night. _________________ Jeff

I guess it wouldn't be so bad if you were on Eastern Time and doing work with someone in LA, but yeah, I wasn't going to get it until I dropped the day job. Now that I have... SourceConnect is up and running!

Donovan,
I'm curious what made you decide to get Source Connect. Did you have a client request it, or was it your idea to get it? I've thought about it, but haven't had any clients using it- so I figured it was $400 down the tube until I knew it would be used. _________________ Threadjackers local 420

Main reasons for buying:
1. Agents/Producers that liked my work, but require ISDN. (Not in my budget, but SC w/the bridge is).
2. I like to have the tools, before I need them.
3. My analogy that if you want to be in a NASCAR race, you can't show up in a Ford Escort. _________________ Donovan

The questions one has to ask is: "How many of your clients have ISDN (or use it), or SC... and would SC pay for itself?"
At present SC has just over 1000 users... with just over three or four years of doing business...
Make a wise choice, buy SC if you have a NEED and clientele for this type of communication, if not - wait....

Me too...although I have been known to get said tools and keep them in a box for 3 months before setting them up...when I suddenly need them (like my famous Phone Patch!)

Yes, but if you're only commuting to work, you wouldn't drive a NASCAR car.
ok, someone call the analogy police. _________________ Jeff

Frank (and others),
I definitely see your point, but I disagree. At least in this scenario. I'd much rather have and not need...then need and not have. Sorry for the analogy, but that would be like waiting to find a flashlight after it's dark.
The reason I'd "need" it would be that a client wants it. But if they want it and I don't have it...then I just lost out on that opportunity. It's happened already due to my full-time job AND for not having ISDN. I'm on the way to living my dream here. Something like not having the tool BEFORE it's needed... I refuse to let that get in my way.
At the core, my point of view comes from the fact that unlike many of the veterans on this board (and in the industry in general) I don't have 15-20 yrs of radio and then 5-10 yrs in VO to fall back on for connections, learning, etc. I'm coming into the game at a time when all of this technology is the norm. Do I need to have EVERY piece of new recording equipment? No. But for the levels I want to reach, I need the minimum to get there. Sure, plenty of folks have made a great living doing VO full-time without ISDN or SourceConnect. But that again draws on years of prior experience and connections.
A few years ago, you were fine to just look in a phone book to find a number, look at TV and hope to catch it on a weather report, use a card catalog to find a book in a library, etc. You think a child growing up now does any of those things? Not a chance. The internet satisfies all of those needs. I am a relative "child" in VO with regard to my less than 3 yrs experience. So I feel the same way. If you want to know what the weather will be like, you want to know NOW. Clients these days are no different.
Jeff, you are absolutely correct. But I no longer commute.
Hopefully that made some sense and wasn't just a mindless rant. _________________ Donovan

Well Donovan,
Using your theory/analogy and your reasons... I would still "hold-off" until I had a need for this type of communication product. Today's society and the "kid" in all of us; uses the internet quite often (I am a good example of the concept - and I am no spring chicken) to procure information quickly.
If you have a client who requires immediate access - then go for it. If not, the internet has an answer for you - instant download. When the client comes along who does express a desire for direct communication or you do not get the gig; go to the internet the day before the recording session and download the product, set it up, and be on your way. Until that time; the scenario you present is like buying a new suit and putting it into a closet in hopes you will wear the suit one day. Or, for the ladies: the scenario is similar to buying a beautiful evening gown and placing it in the closet with the hope you will be invited to accept an award as the best new voice artist ever.
I have said it before, I will say it again: "Source Connect is a great product to have in your arsenal. The software works well, but if you don't NEED it, don't buy it". I must add, even with my own communication product I suggest no one purchases iSpeek until they have a NEED - not a desire.
When you buy an Avalon VT-737SP Pure Class A Preamp, and just plug it into your rack with no I/O cables connected, you will know the concept of what you have proffered with SC. You know the preamp works, but for now - it is just window dressing in your rack.
Sometimes I am too practical for my own good, however I wish you luck with your dream. I am pleased to have you as part of of the ranks of Voiceover Artists everywhere.
Toodles

Mine is white, strapless, and has a silver antiqued lace overlay. It also has a long scalloped train to die for. It's been hanging in a white bag for 2 years just waiting for its moment to shine!
