|
|
Hi there,
I have an iMac with an AirPort card that is connecting to my D-Link router (off of my PC) that was working just fine for months and now when the Mac goes into sleep mode or if you are simply away from the computer for a while, the connection is lost.
When the computer is turned on again you get a message that says "none of your trusted networks could be found" or something like that and asks if I want to connect to Default - and then after clicking yes, the same message appears again - and after clicking on THAT, it finally connects - until you leave the computer again.
Anyone have any ideas what might have happened to cause this change? I do not use the Mac except to convert files using TextWrangler for one client. Carter is the one who uses it and he is not really very technically savvy. And I am PC savvy - don't know much about birth'n no iMacs. _________________ Playing for a living...

Hmm, its a tricky one, delving into the mysteries of wireless transport. I tend to try to keep mine on Automatic.
You might check on the System Preferences to make sure that the iMac has retained your wireless settings. If I have done a bit of housekeeping using something like Onyx then some of my settings go a bit haywire.
Failing that have a look at the Keychain Access and make sure that your settings are there, if not you might have to re-enter them and use the pop-up option to save to Keychain....or it may be a tick box, sorrry, its been a while. _________________ www.davidmonteath.com

My Mom has had to move the placement of her laptop in the house because of
now get this—
this is what the comoputer tech said,
the guy who came to their house—
SUNSPOTS.
No lie.
He said solar activity is having an impact on wifi stuff.
People in the southern parts of the US are especially affected. _________________ DBCooperVO.com

Here are a couple of things to try, though they are a bit technical:
First, go into System Preferences -> Network, then select the Airport connection and click the "Configure.." button. That'll being you to a screen that has "By default, join:" Set that button to "Preferred networks". A list of known networks will come up. If its a stationary system, your network _should_ be the only one that comes up*. If it doesn't show, click on the plus sign and add the network. You can also click on "Options..." and check "Automatically add Preferred networks".
* - even though you might see other networks available in the wireless pulldown from the top of the screen, you should only see networks that you've joined previously as Preferred.
If it's already there, and you have a password-protected wireless network, you can try removing the network from the Keychain. Go to Applications -> Utilities -> Keychain Access. In there, sort by "Kind" and scan your "Airport network passwords". When you see the name of your wireless network, select it, then go Edit -> Delete. That will delete that password. Now turn off your Airport Connection from the top ofthe screen, wait a few seconds, then restart it. It should ask for a password again, and store it properly.
As for the SUNSPOTS, that's a bit questionable for me. If it changes daily, then maybe. Otherwise, I'd guess its a couple of things that typically affect my wireless connection: heavy electric motors (like the blower for your furnace/AC), the waterproof drywall (more like concrete) used in bathrooms, and any stone (marble or granite counters or tile floors, etc). Most of those will significantly impact a wireless signal. Make sure none of those things is between your wireless router and your laptop. |

Hi Connie,
I would check to see if your machine is set to go to sleep. If it is, that will cause you to lose your connection. Go to System Preferences > Energy Saver for the setting. |

Connie:
Take a look at this page. It may just be a longer description of what Bob has already told you, but it's worth a look.
Also it's always a good idea to take a look at the Support section on the Apple Web site. There are discussion boards there. Anytime I have a problem or question, I go there first, and I can usually find other people who have the same issue I'm having and, if I'm lucky, a solution to the problem.

Hey - thanks you guys - I'll read this thread again from the MAC instead of the PC, so that I don't have to transcribe it all...

Had high hopes for that link! Unfortunately I don't have Tiger, so the screens shown in that link are slightly different. I did try to move the Airport option up to the top of the list, but it isn't sticking.
I'll poke around some of the Mac forums when I get a chance. _________________ Playing for a living...

What OS are you running?
If you go into the little Apple on the upper left and select "About This Mac" what does it display? |

Heyo, Sorry for the wait, I'm getting ready for my trip to Japan... (11 days...
I wrote up a short tutorial here: http://whattheflash.com/?mac/tutorials/10.3_airport_autojoin
Images too! I knew there was a reason I still had a computer with 10.3 installed!
Let me know if this helps,
-Blast |

Blast - you are the best! That seems to have done the trick. We made those changes and re-started the system and it automatically connected like it used to. We're letting it sleep now for a while to see it it stays put... _________________ Playing for a living...
