I found this both interesting and gratifying.
I received an e-mail today from a prospective production company to whom I had sent a cold call e-mail soliciting my voice and demos. I never heard a word.
That was in March of last year (2006).
He is now doing television and video production and wants me to voice several of his projects. I've already received the first task.
Man - you just gotta put it out there... then wait. |

Way to go, Doc! I've had the same thing happen to me. Cool when it works. |

I love that, too!
It's like having a bulb planted last spring come into bloom now.
It's just a delight.
You just, as the man said, never know. _________________ DBCooperVO.com

that happens to me sometimes too. maybe i'm like the new paint in the living room ... at first you look at it and think "ok - i'll repaint it next week." then after a month or so you figure "well, i guess it's not THAT bad." _________________ "i know philip banks": todd ellis

Nicely done, Doc!
I e-mailed an e-learning company last year after seeing their job ad for game designers, which included among its duties "...drafting a script for voice talent".
Five MMORPG tutorials and a fair amount of $ later, I'd say it was worth a quick query letter. _________________ Great Voice. Great Choice. For Voice Talking and stuff.

That's great Doc!
Patience pays off. You just never know where that seed you throw out there might take root.
I see you are in Tucson. I spent 8 years there myself when working for IBM. I bet a few things have changed since I was last there in 1989! _________________ Try to imagine a world where there is no such thing as hypothetical situations.

While I didn't post this thread for accolades, I certainly appreciate all the kind words and encouragement from you. It's a staple of this community to support and recognize each other's accomplishments. That's what makes our community so great.
The reason I posted this thread was to possibly offer some encouragment to those a bit newer in the biz who seem to become discouraged with seemingly non-existent responses and/or replies to their solicitations.
Point being - keep on keepin' on!
But, it's still very nice to receive such wonderful acknowledgement.
Thanks so much.
P.S. Bob, actually, I'm in Marana just NW of Tucson... a beautiful, growing community. I use Tucson for marketing purposes. I mean, who ever heard of Marana? LOL |

Doc:
I've spent the afternoon hand-writing a big pile of postcards to a bunch of past and potential clients because I was inspired by your post.
Thanks for the jump-start.

Marana! Where I learned to skydive! I know where that is. True though, most wouldn't. All I really know is how to get there and what it looked like at 10,000 feet. _________________ Try to imagine a world where there is no such thing as hypothetical situations.

Tony,
THAT was my impetus for opening this thread in the first place. Glad it helped.
And, Bob - yup! A couple of jump schools here, actually. |

My first gig came from my Chiropractor, did some medical type narration for his websites, just by chit chatting about what I do. Turns out later that his business partner's daughter is a very well known director in L.A. Turns out even later that when I was taking some lessons from MJ Lallo, that same Director is one of her guest Directors in class. Sometimes I think the world is so small I could never get lost. |

Bob, I look up to you!
I would love to do that, but only if I could wake up and find myself floating in a parachute. I know I could never get myself to jump.
Doc, what a great story. Although the best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago, fortunately we don't need trees - herbaceous perennials and even annuals are swell!
I keep track of various kinds of records with my clients, such as, length of time it takes for a contact to respond to me, length of time it takes from time of contact to first response with a gig, length of time from first contact to gig and so forth. One record is 19 months of resolute silence (with me sending pleasant updates regularly) to response with gig. Another record is 24 months from first contact, with client responding every time I wrote, to hiring (this record-keeping is a legacy of my museum curator days, as well as my bird-watching/listing hobby- and it keeps me out of trouble). |
