I got my new mic in today- woohoo! I recorded a short thang from the old mic and the new mic...does it sound better? Mind you, the hubby was watching TV and the dog got a new squeek toy- so there is background noise.
I had the same compression/ mic-pre settings on both cuts.
It's the MXL V69 Mogami ($300) vs. the Lawson L47FET ($1000)...

Hands down stay with the Lawson... but that is my humble opinion.
I have a fondness for the MXL, as an entry level microphone, but the Lawson was more robust and offered a truer/fuller/non-colored sound for your fabulous voice Kara.

As I most feared when you told us you ordered the Lawson... I am so jealous! .gif" alt="W00T" border="0" />
....and I predict--as you play and experiment with all of your new found dynamic range and just what you can now do with your new tool, you will find the variety of jobs you can go for will increase and multiply.
Ahh Grasshopper. I see (and hear) many great things for you

Yeah, I dig that new mic! Even my hubby could hear the difference...now THAT'S impressive! When I used it in a local production studio I loved how you could get right up on it and speak very quietly, then barely back-up and yell with no spikes or problems.
I can't WAIT to play with this thing! The last 2 days I wouldn't record anything...I held off until this baby was up and running! My plate is mega-full tomorrow! _________________ Threadjackers local 420

As a Lawson L47FET mic owner/user myself, you know I'm gonna say KEEP IT! It much smoother and sounds just plain great! I've had mine since Feb 06 and haven't even thought about trying anything else. I would love to have an L251 to go with it though. Then with the Lawson "QuickChange" system (swapping the head), I can have four different mics. Congrats Kara on a fine mic purchase! I'm sure you'll love it as much as I do. |

...well, of course, it's the Lawson...but with all that yammering in the foreground I could scarcely hear the squeeky toy!

Humph. Silly dogs and their squeeky toys. You will need to offer up more than that to get me out of my Steelers flannel blanket.

Does an experienced and talented VA need a high(er) end mic to sound good?
No. If the gear works for their voice, you'll still produce good takes regardless.
Does an experienced and talented VA benefit from having high(er) end gear?
Absolutely. Again, if the gear works for their voice, the benefit is noticeable (as we can hear from the clip).
There's a reason that the U47, RCA 77-DX, U87, etc. are still so valued in recording studios as something other than antiques. _________________ Voiceovers by Gregory Houser

The Lawson L47FET has a very nice sound. But, you have a very nice voice and would sound good on either. So I say, sell that kidney and get the Lawson! |

Bill, You are very kind. After my first full day with the Lawson, I can say it's a keeper! Greg is right- its all about what works for you. That's why I took 9 months to decide on a mic- I wanted something reliable I could have for a very long time. The first time I heard myself on the Lawson (about a month ago) I knew it was the one for me! Down the road I may want to add to the collection- maybe even another Lawson- but this will do for a while _________________ Threadjackers local 420

Kara,
I just noticed your town. You're up there with Bob, aren't you? I lived in Charlotte from Jan 1955 to spring of 1958 on Fenton Place. I often think how my life would have been different had we stayed, or moved to Atlanta instead of Macon. Enough old man rambling. It's time for Extreme Bingo!
Anyway, congrats on the mic! |

Bill,
Yes, Kara is here in Charlotte. Also VO-BBers: George Washington III (the opera great), Bob Bair (The Voice of Bob), Brian Haymond and most recently added, Brett Mason. _________________ Be well,
