That I LOVE having a client FTP section available on my website. When you've got files just a little too big to e-mail... upload 'em and send the link.
It's one of the best upgrades I've made recently.
How about you? What are your favorite features/handy things to have at your disposal? |

I spoke with my designer yesterday and told him I wanted an FTP page as well- sounds like it was a smart move! I also asked him to set up a personal e-mail so I can stop using Hotmail. It's still about a month away (the new website), but I can't WAIT!
Until then, I like yousendit.com and Pando. _________________ Threadjackers local 420

As a Go Daddy hosting customer, I have been using an Online File Folder function where I can send the customer an auto-expiring link for them to download the files....works great for me. Of course, every Super Bowl, I cringe during the Go Daddy commercials (THAT'S my hosting company???) _________________ George Washington III - The Evolution of Voiceover

Yeah, GoDaddy's spots make my hair curl, too.
I don't use the online file folder setup, but I do create web directories for people, like our Demos page.
You need to know about .htaccess docs to do it with GoDaddy, but once you can convince the Apacher Server system to display folders, you just throw client folders in the root of your site and send a link. _________________ DBCooperVO.com

Deirdre,
I could use the .htaccess method with Powweb, too; but instead I have a template "download" page that isn't linked from anywhere. I use that to create a separate page for each client. It's a matter of only a few seconds to create an active link for the client to download their audio. The template includes download instructions in case they need them. Then I upload the audio and the customized, private page to my server and email a direct link to that download page to my client.
I don't know if it's any easier to things this way, but my brain can get around the process more easily and my less technical clients appreciate dealing with a normal web page. _________________ Be well,

Bob, I've done that as well. If I remember correctly, I encountered a problem though when the client wanted a .wav file. For an mp3 file, you right click and select download but with a .wav file it just seems to play the file not download it. It's been a while so I can't remember how we resolved it. Have you ever had a similar problem? _________________ Elaine

FTP is a fave. So is having an e-mail client with a web host lets me have a fast SMTP when "The New AT&T" is holding e-mail for 4 hours before delivering. Now it's almost instant!
With my web host the directories are also used for FTP . ( I had to space the period after FTP becasue VO-BB thought it was an FTP link. In other words, I can make a directory for a client and make that directory an FTP account. The only difference between a link and an FTP account is that they can use an FTP software program to get their files and upload to me. Also, their account can be password protected.

Elaine,
What you describe doesn't have to the with the file formats, but rather with the way a person's browser is set up to deal with specific file formats. I've sent many .WAV and .AIFF files this way without a problem. For those using Windows, the trick is to always "Right-click" on the file to choose download. Depending on whether a Mac user has a two button mouse or not, they can either Ctrl-click or right click to do the same thing. _________________ Be well,

Exactomundo (as usual) Bob, Also, on older Windows operating systems if you tell Windows to open a WAV file or MP3 with a certain program and to "always remember it" it will do that every time until you change back to ask.
A TV station editor was complaining that they couldn't download my VO's because every time they'd click the link I gave them it would play. So I sent a link to the directory and all is well. |

I couldn't get through to that address, either. If you're sure that the spelling of the address is correct, then probably the FTP server is down. I would try them again later.
And ditto on the FTP client. I like WS_FTP myself, but there are a number of good ones. |

Maybe someone more web savy than me (which isn't hard to be) can answer this. Is there more of a benefit to having an FTP page on your site rather than just uploading a file and sending a client a direct link?
I designed my own site and I have not yet approached the task of setting up an FTP page with logins etc. I figured uploading to my site and sending direct links was the best route?
Anything I am missing out on? Am I using more of my allotted server space or something to that effect. Transfer bandwidth? See I know just enough to be dangerous. Just wondering. _________________ Ben
