Hey gang,
Some of these I'm pretty sure about. Others, I need confirmation. Client in India currently unavailable. Can you help?
("true or false")
WAN = rhymes with LAN
Mbps = mega bits per second
IEEE 802.11 = eye triple 'e' eight oh two point eleven
IEEE 802.3 = eye triple 'e' eight oh two point three
DES (Data Encryption Standard)...is it D. E. S. or 'dess'?
(Ron) Rivest = Rye-vest or Riv-est?
Adi (Shamir) = Aah-dee or Ad-ee?
DAC (Discretionary access control = D. A. C. 'dac'?
MAC (Mandatory access control) = M. A. C. or 'mack'?
Thanks!

Common vernacular is to leave the "point" out of these. So it might be
"eight oh two eleven"
But you're gonna want to get confirmation from your client. _________________ Jeff

Thanks, Jeff! I was hoping you'd be out there.
My plan is to start recording, do two takes of wherever I have doubts, and move along.
But, if anyone else is familiar with 'dack vs. D A C', etc., please chime in.
Thanks again. |

Another way to read the IEEE standards are:
"Eight Oh Two dot Eleven"
at least that's how I've always said it in my IT world.
Of course you all know the reason for 802.* right? The standard was created/accepted in February of 1980.
MAC is mack
DAC is dack
DES is D.E.S. _________________ Try to imagine a world where there is no such thing as hypothetical situations.

WAN = rhymes with LAN TRUE
Mbps = mega bits per second TRUE
IEEE 802.11 = eye triple 'e' eight oh two point eleven (What Jeff said or, "dot" rather than "point.")
IEEE 802.3 = eye triple 'e' eight oh two point three (same)
DES (Data Encryption Standard)...is it D. E. S. or 'dess'? (Spelled out, in my experience.)
(Ron) Rivest = Rye-vest or Riv-est? (Depends. My guess would be your second option.)
Adi (Shamir) = Aah-dee or Ad-ee? (First option, again my guess)
DAC (Discretionary access control = D. A. C. 'dac'? (second option)
MAC (Mandatory access control) = M. A. C. or 'mack'? (second option)
I hope that's at least a little helpful. _________________ Be well,

Reminds me of what a tech buddy used to say: "Jeez, I hate T.L.A's . . . three letter acronyms." |

Actually, Ad-ee is closer to Adi than Ah-dee. It's somewhere between the two with not quite as broad an 'a' in Ad-ee or as open an 'a' in Ah-dee. _________________ Elaine

Ah, India. A few years ago I closed a deal with an educational video producer to do a bunch of audio for videos for a bunch of money. Did one, then got the call that they were moving audio production to India because there they would do the entire 45 minute production (voice over, editing to picture, music, etc.) for $450 each. There were 45 DVDs in the series. I was going to get $2500 each--just for the edited narration.
I still weep today. |
