From today's Writer's Almanac by Garrison Keillor:

Quote:
It's the birthday of the man who gave us the Kodak camera, George Eastman, born in Waterville, New York. He was working at a bank when he got interested in photography around 1877. He took his first dry plate photograph the next year with the camera that he invented—a view of the building across the street from his window. He developed this little handheld camera, and he called it the Kodak because it was easy to remember, difficult to misspell, and it meant nothing, so it could only be associated with his product.

Of course there's the company famous for making cameras used in print shops and in early spy satellites, called ITEK.

Two employees of Eastman Kodak came up with a brilliant idea for a new product and asked the company to fund it. The company refused so the employees decided to develop it on their own. They got the company to sign a document pledging not to sue them for rights to this product. The employees started to become successful in their new endeavor, and Kodak turned around and sued them. The employees won their case and a fair sum of money, as the story goes, so they renamed their company ITEK, for "I Took Eastman Kodak".
