|
|
OK...I'm seriously considering FINALLY getting an iPOD (maybe even the video version), transferring all my CD's (Music & self-help & VO help!) to it for oh-so-much-easier access
BUT
since I've never had an iPOD...and since I'm a PC person, I am admittedly MAC-challenged!
I've heard thet the iPODs have serious battery-life issues.
Also...can I download stuff from iTunes to a generic .mp3 player or does iTunes only play well with the iPOD?
Thanks for any help!

I have a 'thing' about equipment that demands you use their proprietary stuff. You can download iTunes to a generic MP3 player but I believe you have to take an extra step or two in between.
I went with a generic player a couple of months ago and am very happy - should have got one with more storage but other than that I like the fact that I can listen to the radio (which you can't do with the iPod without buying some accessory) and record directly from CDs to the player. _________________ Elaine

My dad bought me a second generation 2gb iPod Nano last year for Christmas. (I was so shocked LOL, I had been asking for one for some time, but I couldn't believe he actually got me one )
I've only had a few problems with it, and none dealing with the battery (or at least not to my knowledge). The first was a computer related thing, as my USB slots wouldn't recognize the Ipod, but we solved that by buying a USB add-on card. The second problem is that occasionally it will go into recovery mode. I just have to do a reset (built into iTunes) and re-sync all my music. It's just frustrating to have it be in recovery mode when I want to listen to it.
Aside from those two issues, I absolutely love my iPod. |

That's 'cause your Dad rocks!
Thanks for all the input so far!
I didn't know there were SO many choices!
UGH! sometimes I wish for the days of only a few choices!
Elaine: which one do you have?

Think it's a Creative Zen - it's downstairs and I don't have the energy to go down and look . If that's not it, I'll update the post. _________________ Elaine

Good luck making your choice of mp3 player. |

I've got a Creative Zen Sleek and love it. I would never consider an iPod because it isn't compatible with OverDrive, the main distributor of online audiobooks for libraries nationwide. So if you're a part of the small niche, like me, and want to download audiobooks from your library, don't get an iPod. _________________ Jeff

UPDATE:
Just checked my library...they use OverDrive.
It's bizarre that an .mp3 isn't an .mp3. isn't an .mp3...if you know what I mean!

I think it boils down to what you want to use it for. A friend of mine used a generic mp3 player for a long time and really enjoyed it. Then he got an iPod and loves it because he uses it mainly to listen to Podcasts listed at iTunes. I like to play mp3s, want to be able to listen to Audible audio books and love the radio so my Creative Zen is right for me. I can get stuff from iTunes if I want and those with an iPod can get mp3s if they want, it's just a little more work. Figure what you'll be using it for the majority of the time and make your decision based on that. _________________ Elaine

You pretty much nailed it Elaine.
Audible Books
Library audio books
Podcasts (from Voices.com & others)
and to convert a good portion of my CDs to it.
..and I like the radio portion too.
SO...a Creative product it probably what I'll go with...now to see the $$ factor!

I have a SanDisk Sansa (m250) 2 gig mp3 player that I use. It works really well. I actually got an iPod nano when I bought my Mac Pro Tower last year in April and I sold the iPod. I already had the SanDisk with a bunch of songs on it and it has a built in FM radio as well (which the IPod does not)...which sounds really good and it gets amazing good reception even in tough places to get reception. I have only had minor issues with it when loading songs etc from the Mac. But that was fixed recently by a quick firmware update from the manufacturer online. It plays mp3, wma and several other formats. Plus the battery, if you get rechargeables, can last up to 18 hours of play time.
If you do go the iPod route and you need wma files transferred to mp3, you can get programs that convert wma to mp3. I have one that I bought for $10 called EasyWMA. It is a Mac program, which may also be PC as well. Do a search. They are out there.
Hope this helps. _________________ Ben
