Celebrating my southern culinary heritage today: I picked a few summer squash out of the garden and deep fried them with a cornmeal batter. In a nod to our time on the Gulf Coast I decided to serve them with a remoulade sauce. Our appetizer came out pretty tasty.
The main course this evening will be a hickory smoked-grilled chicken. It's been on the grill almost 2 hours and is just about ready.
But probably my favorite part comes from the summers I spent with my grandmother as a child. She made the best sun tea. I doubt mine will ever compare to the memory I have of hers but I'll keep trying. It's been brewing out on the deck since around 7am with a fresh sprig of mint leaves added in. All it needs now is a big scoop of sugar and plenty of ice. mmm tasty. _________________ Hart Voice Overs Blog

Interesting. Up here in Maine, we went to a family lobster bake with corn on the cob and hot rolls... Couldn't fit in the car afterwards, though. _________________ Greg Littlefield

Out here in Southern California, I just picked up the kids from their grandparents' house and we did the drive-tru at In-n-Out (which we don't really do all that often). When we were living in other parts of the country I sure missed it!
I wish I could tell you that is part of my regional culinary heritage, but it ain't. My Norwegian grandpa's smoked salmon would have been wonderful today!

Here in the Heartland, it was chicken breast, locally grown corn-on-the-cob and sliced eggplant all on the grill, and it was heavenly, especially with a cold Yuengling or two! |

What Brian forgot to mention is the AMAZING weather we are having in the Carolinas this weekend...i actually had to throw on a sweater! Unheard of in July usually! We enjoyed grilled flounder, veggies picked this morning from the garden and some sweet corn wrapped and grilled with fresh-picked basil and oregano. An incredible evening made better with a bottle of Pinot...locally bottled, of course.
It had been a long, stressful day...so it was the perfect ending...I love summer! _________________ Threadjackers local 420

Yes! I'm looking at the forecast here and nothing above 84 degrees the rest of the week. I am loving it!
Never had the squash you mentioned Brian. I need to try that out though. If I am ever in NC anytime soon....I know who I am calling for some tremendous grilled food. Do you take Amex? _________________ Ben

My afternoon involved live chickens. I was writing and editing a piece for my theater company called "Market Day." I won't go into detail unless anyone is dying to hear about my interaction with those chickens. Meanwhile my daughter spent from 10:30 AM to 5:30 PM in her room finishing BOOK SEVEN!!!

This thread is making me sooooo hungry. (What else is new?) Brian, I've never thought of using Remolaude on anything other than seafood, but it sounds good. _________________ Mary |

Mary,
I used to frequent a restaurant that served it with their fried green tomatoes and their fried pickles. So, on a whim I thought I'd try it with the squash. I have to say it was pretty darn tasty but I wish I'd made the remolaude a tad spicier. _________________ Hart Voice Overs Blog

We have loads of tomatoes, and basil in the garden, so I made bruchetta, and a fresh marinara sauce over angelhair pasta, salad (topped with tomatoes of course), and some red wine. Yummy. _________________ Bobbin Beam
