The productions can be anything...tv, radio, sales videos, on hold, anything...and the way I'm hooked up (not through a mixer) I cannot record in two channels at once...I have to convert...but I don't think it makes a bit of difference if you record that way or duplicate (not split as this client thinks) the file later. |

I had a client asking for stereo because he couldn't convert the mono file in his video editor. He was really getting dual channel mono, not true stereo.
Just remember the client is always right even when it's inconvenient for us.

They're very happy this morning with my "new stereo recordings." |

What Mike said is dead on correct. If you're not using two sound sources, it's not really stereo anyway. The 22vs.44 is an issue with mono converted to stereo, but c'mon...they seriously can't copy your mono file and then pan them left and right???
Unfortunately, I can imagine this conversation:
"And, can you send us the files in stereo?"
"Certainly. Is there any specific reason for that, was something wrong with uploading the mono files?"
"No, we just find that stereo has more sizzle, it's more in your face."
"I see. Do you compress the audio, run eq, sweeten it at all once you get it from me."
"Oh yeah, our guys can do all kinds of wonderful things with all their bells and whistles, I don't know exactly how they do it (*snort, giggle*). Why do you ask?"
"Oh...just wondering..."
"I just wanted to mention, you don't have to send me two copies of the invoice this time. We just throw the other one away. Toodles." |

Did someone already say this? You record in mono, copy the track, insert both in multitrack, mix the two tracks to one as stereo, and ... magic.
Whatever. Happy your client is happy, Melissa! _________________ sitting at #8, though not as present as I'd like to be. Hello!

I'm sorry, but I get this from folks who ping me on AIM (found me from my postings on an Amateur board).
Unless you're using a stereo microphone, you're not going to notice a difference. Most of the rocket scientists who ask for it don't understand that for a true stereo clip, you're going to have multiple tracks.
My favorite was the guy who asked his talent to record in 5.1, because you know, since his editor had a preset, that everyone's did. That only one of the folks had a 5.1 stereo recording chain was beside the point...
After reading through the posts, Doc's response is the only one that truly makes sense to me, if I were trying to crawl into the client's head (a task, which I have given up on, based on past disappointments). _________________ Voiceovers by Gregory Houser

I tried that once, but the engineer pulled me off before I could get the drill bit locked in place.
Sometimes I swear that's what clients need.

Considering how much of a pain it is to clean up a recording area, I quite agree with the engineer's actions.
In my case, it was a disappointment in finding an empty chasm on so many occasions. _________________ Voiceovers by Gregory Houser

Yeah. Mostly I just sit in the booth spitting at the window. Engineers HATE that.

I agree with this completely.
However, I also imagine a world in which everybody merely did what their clients/bosses asked and I shudder. |

Wait, so you're saying there IS a difference between something recorded on two channels simultaneously (faux stere) and something converted to stereo in "post?" Now *I'm* confused. |
