Hi Everyone

I am trying to find the best way to edit out my breaths using adobe audition. How do you take out breaths and keep a smooth sound through out the recording?

Thanks in advance for your help.

i usually apply a -12 to -14 db cut over the breath sounds. i set up a short-cut key for it - so it's just a one-button operation.

effects > amplitude > amplify > choose your setting

Todd, I tried your advice--works like a charm! I love using shorcuts too.

Brett, I tried your advice, but my eyes began to bug out (sort of like your cat's eyes:-)

Thanks!

one-button, but you still have to select each breath, right?

If I do not select each breath and "silence" the breath (not delete the breath); I use DeBreath from Waves.

DeBreath works like a charm, although I still need to double check the breath sounds... one or two may have slipped by the program. A little tweaking is all it takes and you have clean file.

How does the plugin work, Frank? Is it just a limiter? Had any problems with it cutting out desired sounds?

No, DeBreath is not just a limiter. It is an isolating frequency modifier - of sorts.

Similar to a good noise reduction program, Users select and isolate the sound they wish to remove. Set the parameters in the program, then Select All (the entire audio file), and click OK.

If used properly only the sounds desired to be removed, are removed. DeBreath takes a little work the first few times of use - but is easily learned and a welcome product for use in long form audio projects.

One Caveat - this can be used in AA 2.0, not AA 1.5. Personally I use it more often in Sony Vegas 7.0.

Does Abobe Audition have an equivalent to Strip Silence.....if so, work out your settings to remove everything below a certain level, highlight the entire track and process.

Make sure you check it, although you should do that in any case...sometimes you can just hack off important bits at the beginning and end of words.

Or try using Pro Tools free.

PT Free works only with Mac OS 9 or Windows 98 or some Other Ye Olde System.

J.K.: I didn't say DeBreath was cheap... I just said DeBreath worked well.

David: Yes, it is called a "noise gate". and it can sort of work for this concept, but will also strip softer words or sounds from the entire project when not desired.

Todd: When I have a few moments I will do a simple and easy comparison file.

et al: When doing long form audio for projects (i.e.: audiobooks, narrations, etc:) DeBreath is an easy way to save several hours of editing by NOT having to select each breath and silence the sound. Recently on a long project (168 single spaced pages) I swear the program saved more than four hours of editing... So what is your time and energy worth? Three hundred fifty dollars over 50 or 100 projects which you could save four to five hours of editing at say $85.00/hour?

Only you can decide what your talent and services are worth to you. Remember there are three types of valuation of your products or services: the price I desire for my services, the price my clients are willing to pay for my services; and the price the overall market says I should be getting for my services.

Personally, I want a fortune for my talents...(but do not always get what I want...LOL).

Toodles
