The thread discussing m4a files in the critique section reminded me of this. Those of you using Audition/Cool Edit can open m4a files (and others) with the addition of some free filters from http://www.vuplayer.com/audition.php

I've found several to be fairly handy. This is third party freeware so use at your own risk, but I've never had a problem.

... or you may also add the Nero mp4 .dll to you audition folder and thus convert to m4a/mp4 as well.

Do a Google search and you find several plug-ins including ogg-vorbis, LAME, and others to mention just a few.
