Mine is a Stedman ProScreen XL, metal. I've only done a handful of recordings with it, and it works great. No discernible distortion (nothing these ears would notice, anyway). _________________ Justin S. Barrett

I'm beginning to see more and more of the Steadman's in the studios here. I thought I would save some money and bought an el-cheapo metal screen figuring there can't be much difference. False economy I guess.

I'm gonna go with Ben on this one. I have a nice big pop filter at home... but I don't use it any more.
I've found that there's a nice sweet spot in my mic's pickup pattern if I place it slightly (3-4 inches) ABOVE my mouth. The mic is looking at my forehead.
Large diaphragm mics are not really meant for “close mic”. If you’re using a dynamic like the EV RE-20/27 then YES you’re gonna want a good pop filter because you gotta get up close and personal with the mic.
DON’T use the “foam socks” that go over the mic. IMHO they make everything sound MUDDY! _________________ Dave "Christi" Felton

I used the panty hose over a needlepoint loop. It worked well, but I had a tough time mounting it. Holding it like the hula hoop suggestion worked, but it gets tedious setting it down and picking it up and bumping into the mic etc.
I bought one of the SE metal versions and it seems to work well.

Diane - I have a Studio Projects metal pop filter. It's well built, washable, does the job well. Average price seems to be $35.00 mark, or less at this place :-

i, of course, have far too many ski socks ...
thanks everyone for your suggestions. i've not moved on this yet, and am hoping somehow the will come out in me. then, i can be a purist like some advocate and forego a windscreen altogether.
after waaaaay too much time spent editing the other day, and sending some sample sound to a colleague, it's been determined there's definitely something weird going on. soundcard? mic? general static?
as i said, i have the shure popper stopper with a shredded, uh, stopper. i repaired with nylons but it's not efficacious. being 'green' i wish to reuse the gooseneck and mic stand clamp so ....
there's the latest exciting installment of "as the windscreen blows." _________________ sitting at #8, though not as present as I'd like to be. Hello!

i've never really used one --- then a few weeks ago i bought a metal screen version - used it - and noticed no difference at all. when i DID notice a difference is when i used dave's mic technique mentioned in this thread ... wow! that tip alone has paid for my ticket here. _________________ "i know philip banks": todd ellis

yeah, i tried dave's technique. sounds like i'm really far from the mic, and it's not picking up the smooth crisp deep real voice i, uh, use. _________________ sitting at #8, though not as present as I'd like to be. Hello!

Will it make my ADK A-51 sound like a Neumann? _________________ Try to imagine a world where there is no such thing as hypothetical situations.

Late on this discussion but here's my .02.
I bought a nice big double screen foam pop filter earlier this year as the 416 is especially prone to plosives and what not. As Ben mentioned earlier, I noticed some serious phasing issues when using this a few inches away from the mic. I was really disappointed. Apparently, the 416 doesn't like being tamed.
Ended up using the foam windscreen that comes with the mic. Originally, I had thought it cut too much high end but after playing a little with the processing and EQ, I found a sound that I'm really happy with. _________________ Joe Szymanski
