wondering if you use one, which one, and pros/cons.
i've got a large diaphragm cardiod mic that is driving me batty of late, with clicks, chirps and the like. could be the mic ... could be the replacement filter (black pantyhose--only the hose--to replace the shure popper stopper original, which is shredded).
i've been thinking about a metal windscreen (??) and now thinking about a double replacement screen/hoop from popless.com that is pricey ($36) but seems much more durable.
what say you? and thanks in advance! _________________ sitting at #8, though not as present as I'd like to be. Hello!

I use a double pop screen I got from Sweetwater (can't find the brand name on it). It helps a TON- yet I still sometimes have to do a little editing in post-prod. For whatever reason, p's have always been my nemesis... _________________ Threadjackers local 420

I usually just put the panty hose over my head when voicing stuff. I am not sure why I get screams when I walk into local studios for gigs though.
Kiddin'......I try not use one these days. I talk across the mic and just use the foam screen with my 416. Other mics I would use one... I guess. I have a black single layer screen with a flexible gooseneck that attaches to my stand. It works nicely when I use it.
My good pal Joe JTVG said he noticed some phasing when recording with his metal pop filter. Thought that was interesting. Just a possible heads up. YMMV. _________________ Ben

Use the fabric type pop filter, it reduces pops and sibilance.
I find most condensor mics to have some sibilance issues, especially on females.
The Shure model Popper Stopper is great. Four layers of thin fabric.
Available at bswusa.com.
The metal ones work on pops but can create an odd resonance. _________________ www.asapaudio.com |

BTW: I use a fabric mesh Popper-Stopper! _________________ Liz de Nesnera O.A.V. ~ Livin' The VO Dream!

The principle theory behind some of the more expensive metal screen pop filters is "uniform deflection" of plosives. Think of the screen slanted ever so slightly in the same direction, sort of like window blinds. That directs the air away from directly into the mic.
I have the plans for using the two-part sewing hoops with panty hose double layered in them. Seems to work OK. (But try to get new ones 'cause used ones tend to smell funny.) _________________ Wild Willie Edwards

I picked up on of the Popless Voice screens from popfilter.com. I like it because it has 2 screens that allow you to alter the amount of filtering by using just one or both screens at the same time and also by changing the spacing between the two screens either close together or far apart. The 3.5 inch model allows for better visability of copy.
Technique is very key as has been stated earlier. Being used to so many live jobs gave me the habit of keeping the mic close, something I had to break in the studio. _________________ Try to imagine a world where there is no such thing as hypothetical situations.

I got mine from popfilter.com, too. I've been very happy with it. |

I have a metal screen, but I've noticed some occasional distortion, so I only use it now when I run out of talent.
