Me too Bob - the copy stand is to hold the pages of the script that I will be reading, but the active page gets stuck in the acoustic foam with a straight pin. The stand just doesn't go up high enough.

If the script is really short, sometimes I'll just hold it, and see if I can flail one arm around without making any noise. It's good practise in case I ever need to sneak up on somebody and beat 'em up.

Of course for those who want a monitor in their booths it could be at odds with that "How to mark up copy" class you attended.

Out of interest one director told me she could tell how out of their depth a voice was by the extent to which they marked the script.

I'm sure this makes me a bad voiceover talent, or something, but I never mark my scripts. (Well, except for copy changes from the client. Those I usually write on the copy.)

Bob,
What it makes you is a veteran VO artist that can "see" the markups without having them on the page. Much like the savants that "see" numbers and can work out pi in their heads to 1,000,000 places.

I need some just to keep me from emphasizing the wrong words, or how NOT to say some words.

Along with any other help I need. ( I need a LOT!)

i endorse the minimalist phase (read: it's all i got):
no copy stand, no copy mark-up (not much, anyway), and furalex is great for voodooing copy (insert straight pin here)

yeah, not into marking up copy much either... worst case it's a word or two as to something I know I ought to be doing, but aren't (such as "smile").

Otherwise, I keep my ideas off-paper and see where the copy takes me once I approach it with a strong initiation.

Decisions, decisions... the Jazz stand or the Studio stand. Both look very nice Smile

I did a two and a half hour session reading math problems yesterday in the studios of an educational firm based here, and I read the entire script off of a monitor they controlled. It worked all right, but the director would occasionally hit the "page down" button while I was on the last few words of a page and it gave me whiplash of the eyeballs and a little punch of nausea each time.

I guess I'm getting used to reading off a monitor (I do it for most auditions these days) and I sure wish the ad agencies that re-write copy five times during a session would put their copy on a monitor and edit it there, instead of me trying to wade through a road map of line-outs, arrows, and inserted copy.

Yes indeedy they are.

Quick question for you, why did you go with the Jazz over say, the studio or concert series?

I've had two other folks recommend these, but chose the concert series (which are very nice, but pricey).

It ticked all the boxes for me so never even looked at the concert series. Having just looked I know why. The rat stand leg configuration works either way , facing forward or back and at the time I bought it that made sense.
