I know what you are thinking. What could Willie possibly know about Do It Yourself?
Well, I have a secret--a ringer.

Check it out here: How you can do it.

Oh yeah. The panels look and work great.

Willie,

Those look great!

You know... if you want to build some matching bass traps to go with them it's just as easy... Laugh Once you start down the DIY path, well, it's a never ending journey.

Very cool. If you don't mind a dumb question...how did you get them to stand up?

They do look really good! I'm curious about the weight. I don't see anything about how much each panel weighs. I made my panels out of hollow doors. This could actually be cheaper per panel and superior noise abatement.

Ron, I attached my panels to a wall using hinges, then hinged two panels together so it works like one big folding door to enclose one area of a room.

Hear that? (tap tap tap) That's Bob Vila knocking at your door! Good stuff! Thanks for the inspiration.

To answer thevoiceofbob's question about weight, here is another option that involves PVC pipe and sound material. Very light weight and inexpensive.

Bill,
I wasn't really looking for a light weight option, I am just curious about how heavy those finished panels are, how they compare to treated door panels. I'm sure they are superior in function.

Bob,
My closest estimation is about 13.5 lbs per panel.

Listen carefully. If you can figure a way to perhaps use spray adhesive to "wrap" the heavy fabric around the the 703 or 705 panel without the backer board, it should make for a much more versatile and sound controlling panel. And it would only weigh around 3-5 lbs.
The acoustical theory suggest that it's best that sound be able to "pass through" the panel and not be reflected by a solid backing.

I may try that later. I still have plenty of fabric...or since you are not that far away....get some 703 and bring it up and we'll get my wife to wrap it. Laugh

How about mounting it on peg board?

You have the holes which would allow sound to pass through, it is thin, and you could use the holes to hang it on a nail or screw and it would give it a little more rigidity.

Just thinkin'

When you use peg board the holes act like Helmholtz resonators. Space it off the wall a inch or so and that help the. Some time the 703 (fiberglass) has a foil back, remove it to use with the peg board.

Instead of Muslin, us Burlap it’s more open to sound pressure waves and will work better. It also comes in a wide array of colors.

One other trick if you are inclined to do it is use a solution of Borax and water to soak the Burlap or fabric in. Let it dry and the Borax act as a flam retardant. Look on line for the formula.
