One of my students is having the devil of a time in her home studio.

http://www.vo-bb.com/demos/BiffTest.mp3

Here are 2 short clips-- one recorded on her Mac, the other on her PC.
It sounds electrical.
She turns everything in the house OFF when she records and still she gets this garbage.

I haven't asked her about line conditioners yet— sounds like that's the first fix, but I just wanted to run this by you all.

I would agree, line/power conditioner first. I would guess that will take most of it away.

Are these on notebook computers? If so, tell her to run from battery, not plugged into the wall.

I've got it. It's Philip trying to turn on his electric toothbrush.

Does she have one of those lamps that you touch the base to turn on? Those things have enough RF to thaw a turkey.

Is there a dimmer switch somewhere in the house? Those things cause electrical noise as well.

Just shootin' in the dark...

She needs power conditioners...she's getting a buzz between her computer and her interface.

The clicky sound is similar to what I posted a couple weeks ago.

I'm awaiting a new laptop to see if it solves the problem.

What is her setup?

Mac iBook from a couple of years ago, and Cubase.

She still hadn't partitioned her drive and was recording into the same drive as the OS.
Not enough RAM.

Frank suggested "pagination" as well, with the read/write arms flying all over the plates of the HDD.

I suggested a line conditioner and an external drive at the very least.
More RAM if she can.
She was hoping for a recommendation for a USB mic because she'd like to forget Cubase (thank god!) and use Garage Band.

I'll add my vote for something on the same circuit causing the noise. If this is happening on both the Mac AND PC, I'm not inclined to think it's paging problems on both computers.

I found a link to a Presonus forum discussing the exact issue I'm having only I'm using the Inspire instead of the fire--whatever. Much of it is way over my head, but I'm thinking of uninstalling cubase on this 'puter and seeing if that has any effect. Could the Cubase drivers cause problems in Audacity even when Cubase isn't running?

Here's a link to the forum:

Dierdre you student's clicks sound exactly like what I'm experiencing. What interface is she using?

I uninstalled Cubase...didn't make a diff.

Seemed to for the first 8 minutes or so, but then I got the random pops and crackles.

My student was using a Lexicon Lambda.

It never played nice with her Mac.

Betcha an external drive will clear things up. Whenever I accidentally try to record to the laptops drive instead of the external drive the result is almost always hash.

Lexicon's have an inherent problem with ASIO II drivers... they don't play nice with almost anything.

Sorry Lexicon. This is my personal opinion, yours may vary and gasoline mileage is not guaranteed.
