Periodically, I come across tools that really surprise me. In my case, this began as an attempt to make client logins easier and more efficient for both myself and clients AND the fact that I really do not want to shell out 3795 for a DigiDelivery server. I came across a product called CrushFTP. Now I know everyone has their FTP solution and most of you probably love what you have so this for those of you who are still looking.
CrushFTP is a Java based application that runs on Mac OSX, Linux and Windows, listening for FTP, Secure FTP, HTTP, HTTPS, Secure Shell and WebDav traffic, based on your configuration, responding as each of those servers would. Essentially, it's like having six servers in one. The setup is very simple as the author provides QuickTime movies and in less than 15 minutes, you're out the door with a generic setup.
Going a little further into the configuration, you can change the entire look and feel of the product so it matches the theme and identity you have created for yourself on the web. Additionally you can create custom forms for uploads. One feature I really like on the DigiDesign servers is the ability to automatically issue an email when a new file has been uploaded. Assuming you upload content to your server with a custom form, again, easily created from the products gui, emails can be issued in the same manner.
The drawback is that most ISPs will not install this tool because it's not a canned resource, if your ISP fits that bill, you might have to install it at home or go into colocation with a buddy. It supports multiple domains so that wouldn't be much of a problem, in fact, both sites would have different appearances. In my situation, I'm using Bluehost.com for a majority of my services with the FTP server sitting next to my DAW.
I'm not associated in any way, shape or form with CrushFTP other than that of a satisfied customer. If you want to test it out on my box, hit the Client Login on my site with "test" for userid and password.
