Here's something kind of fun. Apparently there are new ringtones, called mosquito ringtones, I think and they play at 17khz and above. If you're over 20 you can't hear them..or can you? Here's a hearing test and a little more info on the subject. I made it to 14.9 today...says I should be in my 30's...not too bad for a guy nearly 51

16.7. Says my 35 year old rear is in my 20's.
Not bad for a guy with hearing loss from years of standing beside F-14/18 engines. |

Uh-oh. I topped out at 15.8kHz. With headphones on.

OMG, all I could hear above 10Khz was the click of the tones going on and off. But my dogs heard everything all the way to the top of the scale! Drove 'em a little nuts.

I topped out at 18.8 on studio monitors... but I couldn't take any more... my ears were hurting at 12.8. And YES, I get another year older in 10 days, but I still have my hearing...not much hair, not my "girlish" figure, my teeth are shot... but I still can hear.
Probably won't do that again...
whew...
Now I know why when I go into stores with lots of electronic cash registers and proximity door openers... I cringe...

I'm 36 and the highest I could clearly hear was 17.7. 18.8 is sorta there...mostly a subtle pressure difference, though. After Frank's studio comment, I'm curious to try this in one of our suites at work tomorrow. _________________ Justin S. Barrett

Hmmm... 17.7 here over the speakers with the mini-fan blowing away behind me.
I tried to get a response from the dogs upstairs, but when I went up to check on them, they had socks stuffed in their ears. It really bugs me that they know what I'm going to do before I've done it... _________________ Greg Littlefield

Interesting...at work on my headphones (admittedly not stellar), I can't hear the 17.7...it's more of that "pressure" thing that I heard at home on my computer speakers (satellite/subwoofer combo) with the 18.8 tone. Now I'm really curious to check this out in our suites, and also with my better cans at home, which I didn't think of trying last night.
Edit: In the suite over the monitors, the 17.7 was the highest again, although the 18.8 was a stronger pressure than at home, but not quite a recognizable tone. One odd thing was that either the 19.9 or the 21.1 (forgot which) played some odd harmonic tone that was clearly audible on the monitors, but not audible anywhere else I've listened so far. I'm guessing it's due to the MP3 format of the tones, which makes me want to try this test with a more accurate tone generator. _________________ Justin S. Barrett

I'll have to try this when I get home. I know I had one of those outside "dog silencer" devices that sends out a signal when a dog starts barking. I had it pointed to our neighbors house since they refused to do anything about their disturbing dog that would bark continuously as soon as it got dark because it was tied up outside 24/7. When I cut the grass the mower would trigger it and it drove me crazy so I would have to shut it off while I was mowing.
Amazing considering I worked for years as a security supervisor at an outdoor concert venue and was in charge of the area directly in front of the stage. I figured I was seeing/hearing/feeling 100 bands a year. I had earplugs but I had to wear a headset to talk with the other supers and communicate with police/medical/etc... On some shows I would put half an earplug even in that ear that was covered by the headpiece to keep out the sound. _________________ Try to imagine a world where there is no such thing as hypothetical situations.

Ok, I have a bit of an advantage...I'm 17 I could hear the 21.1kHz if I turned up the volume just a hair, course now I have a headache...
I should try that on my mom, she's partially deaf in one ear
UPDATE: She could hear up to 12kHz, and higher then that I could hear it coming through the headphones when she was listening. |
