Hello VO-BBer's - When providing books-on-tape samples (to a client or an online VO site) is it okay to record a demo from a book you haven't been contracted to record aka War and Peace or are there copyright issues? Just wondering how to get a couple of samples together. Many thanks in advance and enjoy the beautiful wx this wknd! cool

HI, Stephanie! You might want to check out http://www.gutenberg.org as they have a ton of digitized and transcribed books.

For instance, War and Peace which, according to this page, isn't copyrighted in the U.S. If it's just for a demo, I would imagine any book with good characters and dialogue would do.

Another good site to check would be http://www.archive.org . They have a bunch of good material, too!

Adding to Greg's post: a lot depends on the particular rights held by the copyright owner(s). If there are transcription rights or recording rights held, then one may not use any of the material written without consent.

Public domain books are a great way to transcend the copyright laws. There are several hundred ways to find Hobo Laughing books and transcripts with a Google search.

Along that line, check out LibriVox. There are hundreds of volunteers there working to record all public domain works and release them as free audiobooks. You could sign up to read single chapters if you want, and it would give you good practice reading different kinds of material.
