If for whatever reason you decide to take a gig that pays less than your usual fee, you should always talk to the client on the phone before recording, because INVARIABLY they will use adjectives to describe what they want you to do that have NOTHING to do with what they actually want. A phone call or better yet phone session will save you time.
We've all heard it. The fee is inversely proportional to the PINQ (Pain-In-the-Neck Quotient). |

Here's one - Before you make the decision to install ISDN or some other costly technology, you will have passed on jobs that you could have landed had you had it. As soon as you spend the money and time installing, you won't have any jobs that need it.... for awhile at least. _________________ Joe Szymanski

Joe, that is subclause number 1,703 of Murphy's Law! I'm thinking that once you install ISDN, the Law is that you have to contact everybody you've ever contacted that you would consider working with to let them know you have it.
By the way, the client who inspired me to start this thread came back this morning with a request for another take - his client decided they wanted a completely different read from the one they first described.
He had the grace to say that his client is a lunatic. I just wish he didn't have to turn me into one too. |

I've learned to really dislike it when a client says "get it back to me whenever, later this week, sometime next week" because I usually do put it off and when it comes time to turn it in I'm jammed up with other work and/or personal business and I'm in a panic trying to get it all done. So I proffer:
"Don't put off until tomorrow any work that you can do today because tomorrow may be a mofo."

Bruce, I wonder if that phrasing would be more compelling than the one I've always used with my kids.
Thank-you for the laff |

I like Philip's "Red-hot-desk" philosophy.
A script on the desk starts to singe if left there too long, and will eventually combust— so do it now. _________________ DBCooperVO.com

A poorly written script is never written on a white piece of paper. It is written on a red flag. _________________ Skype: globalvoiceover

additional rule:
the time to cringe is when you hear the dreaded words: "oh, i dunno...just have FUN with it." _________________ rowell gormon

Agreed. What I call, "hassle factor" is relegated to high maintenance individuals. _________________ Bobbin Beam

Especially if that's the FIRST thing they say. It's one thing to do that after a couple of "keepers" just to see what else you might have... but to say that at the beginning?
Because you know once you "have fun" with it, the next thing they'll say is, "Well, that's not quite what we had in mind... " _________________ Charter Member: Threadjackers Local 420 |
