a client wants his audio in a .vox format. is there any difference in the .vox extension created in, something like, "vox studio" and the .vox file created in, say "audition"?

i'd rather ask the stupid question here than find out from the client i was wrong.

Todd there can be some differences, depending upon the additional information required by your client.

The vox format most commonly uses the Dialogic ADPCM (Adaptive Differential Pulse Code Modulation) codec. Similar to other ADPCM formats, it compresses to 4-bits. Vox format files are similar to wave files except that the vox files contain no information about the file itself so the codec sample rate and number of channels must first be specified in order to play a vox file. Vox a very old file type and is pretty poor. The vox format is not recommend for anything except for supporting legacy systems. Either m-law or mu-law must be specified as well as bit depth and rate.

Vox Studio converts WAV files, in batch mode, to VOX (or VAP) telephony files (ADPCM, CCITT A-law and Mu-law, PCM, WAV, CVSD for cards by Dialogic, NMS and many others)

Good luck.

Toodles

well, i was curious.
so i selected a piece of audio previously recorded at 44,1 16-bit mono and saved that as .vox. then i opened the .vox file and, after asking me to agree to the default interpretation (44,1) i opened the file and it sounded ... the same!
so when applied to telephone, is the fidelity permanently reduced and i'm just not hearing it since, when opening in adobe audition, it defaults to that 44,1 sample rate as a matter of course?

(uh ... what??)

thanks, frank. it is a legacy PBX.

so if i'm hearing you correctly, all i need to do is record at the same sample rate as playback and all will be cool?

ok --- if i open the file at 44.1 it sounds perfect (at least as perfect as it can considering it's me)

the client needs the file at 8k ... when i open said file @ 8k it sounds all pitched down and garbled. is this the way it will transfer to the PBX?

2. my sound card won't let me record below 32k

c. when i try to use the "Convert Sample Type" option in Audition it sounds all fuzzy and crappy

AND ... why can't the telco world wake up and switch to a more efficient format?

OK... just in case someone needs an audio file conversion program...

This is one of my most guarded secrets BUT since we are all friends here I'll spill my guts and pass along a really useful little program (FREE) that will convert virtually any audio file to a loooooong list of file types... including .vox. Well, OK. I did post this once before ("Hello." "Testing... 1, 2, 3... is this thing on?") but it was probably a year ago so maybe it bears repeating....

One of Dave's favs:

Easy to use and there's no spyware, popups etc.

Enjoy!
