Just a point of clarification... Once a section of audio is recorded, and then "CONVERTED" to another format through a codec such as .mp3.

In our scenario... we recorded at 24 bit 48,000 kHz. To proceed to make this a surround file we would add the Left and Right Front (as a stereo pair), the Left and Right Rear (as a Stereo pair), and the Center Channel and Sub-Woofer (as two mono channels.. These together make up the surround channels for an AC3 coded file.

When the audio has been recorded and saved as a proper file to which the AC3 encoder can use, the files are combined together and form a 192 kilo bytes per second (kbps) encoded audio file from the previous set of files.

Certain encoders require a 48 kHz audio file to encode to the AC3, some require 96 kHz files to record to AC3. The requirements are based on your particular audio encoder style and manufacturer.

So like .mp3 codecs, you may encode the original file to say 96 kbps, 128 kbps, 256 kbps, or other related kbps specific to the type of encoding and fidelity you are attempting to accomplish.

Toodles

Your humble servant,

Frank F

If not otherwise specified, I do all my voice-over recordings as 16 bit, 44,1 kHz, and encode the final file(s) to mp3 16 bit, 320 kb/s mono. Clients seems to be happy. For a short period of time, I recorded in 24 bit, 96 kHz, dithered and bounced, but no one seemed to notice anyway...

Just my DKK 0.25
